I have a 1956 X50 that was my dad’s guitar and my first player. I played in a band called off all things, the Psychedelic Five in the late 60s. Never in public, pure garage band but fun. Now I am refreshing the guitar and need a few parts, a tone knob and a small tailpiece on the back where the neck connects to the body. (See pic four) Anyone with any thoughts on sourcing those would be greatly appreciated!

The ”small tailpiece” is called a heel cap, and you’ll need to go to a luthier to have one made. it’s basically a piece of plastic glued to cover the end wood of the heel.
If you’re handy, you could have a go at making it yourself, although the readily available plastic blanks are not as thick as they used back then. But, it would at least cover it.

The knob was likely made by Dakaware and you can search for a vintage replacement on Reverb.com.

What a nice X-50.
It's great that it's still in the family......I'm sure there are stories to tell.

I had a '55 once upon a time and wish I'd never let it go.

Awesome, I have a guy that does that sort of work, replacing pick guards, etc plus he builds his own guitars. I have had him do pick guards on several Martin mandolins, didn’t even think of him. This is a great forum, glad to have found it.
Could this be one?

Ralf, it sure looks like it, does it have a set screw on the opposite side of the line? My volume knob does but I can’t get it off, obviously it has been too many years.

I should have read the whole link, yes it looks correct and I have one ordered. Appreciate your assistance greatly.

Welcome! That's a beautiful X-50. I had a '57 X-50 that I regret selling. Live and learn.

Welcome Dball. Man that is a beautiful old X-50. The aged finish is perfection. You are a lucky guy to have that, especially from your dad.

It sure does, just wish I still had my dad’s tube amp that he played it through. It was a Fender, don’t remember the model or anything else other than that it has a tweed type exterior. It would be worth a lot more than the guitar for sure. I played through it in the 60’s until it failed and he got a new cheap amp. Anyway, you are right, it still sounds fantastic.

Hey folks, the final thing I am missing with my ‘56 X-50 is a hard shell case. Anyone have a decent source? Of course I would prefer a vintage one but haven’t found any yet, so I guess I am ready to get a new one. I am hoping to get out and play with some other guys in our community but have nothing to protect it. Advice would be appreciated.

Welcome . . . IMO a new case will provide much better protection for the instrument versus a vintage case. The vintage cases tend to be relatively thin, with little padding.

Someone else might know which case will fit your guitar, but some new-case options from Guild can be found here

Thanks geoguy, I had looked at the Guild cases and I am not sure they are thick enough for the X-50. Also the one that did seem a possible fit is out of stock. Most of my other instruments have newer cases for the protection offered, but I do have a few with original cases from the 50’s and 60’s. And one from the 20’s but that’s a sax.
