Hi JB,

Well one thing is for certain and that is Dino just raised his prices by 20%+ in the last week. Looks like it was the first increase in about 3 years.

IMHO buying a "new X2000" from Dino would be the way to go if you have more money than you know what to do with or for bragging rights. For that amount of money you can keep an eye out of ebay and somewhere in the next 12 months pickup an origional Nightbird in very good to excellent condition for less than $2000. A real nice Nightbird sold late November for $1200! That particular guitar had its EMGs replaced with Gibson HB which probably lower the $ but in reality made it a better sounding guitar-I should have snagged that baby!. I have owned a Nighbird, and a variety of Bluesbirds, Blues90's a Bluesbird 90. The Nightbirds are beautiful guitars. Most have EMG which requires a special tast in pickups. It is different than most passive pickups and is not for everyone. Additionally the Nightbird and X2000 have Master tone and volume controls while the Bluesbird has independent volume and tone for each pickup (my preference). An EMG PUP Nightbird doesnot have the sound of a blues guitar.

thank you for answering matsickma!

when i saw he increased his price i've to say that i got a little bit surprised cause i saw these guitars for years now and if he didn't sell for 3180 i wonder how it will sell for 4150 !!!

Anyway you're right about getting a nightbird and rip off the emg pickup....

But i really appreciate the blue color of the X2000 and that's one important reason i want this one cause i think it may be a one of a kind....

Mike or anyone:

Do you know what model of EMG pickup was used on the Nightbird? Looking at the Beasley book I see that Nightbirds had the option of EMG's, Kent Armstong and Guild Humbuckers... Does anyone have an idea how many of each type of pickup was used? I also see one Nightbird on the Nightbird pages that at least one guitar was outfitted with special ordered Duncan pickups..

And to respond to JB's original question.. you could get two Bluesbirds one with P-90's and one with Duncan pickups for half the money that X-2000 would cost.

Howard, I believe the EMG's in the Nightbirds are typically EMG 60 humbuckers. Hans can crack my knuckles if I've got it wrong. But to my ears there is a significant tonal character and range difference between the EMG's in my Nightbird, compared to the EMG 81 bridge pickup on my S-270.

I never pulled the pickups out of the Nightbird I owned but both had white EMG lettering on the cover which I would assume makes the set of model 85 neck and model 81 bridge. I have had a variety of Guild guitars from the 1980's with EMG pups. I once had a Super Detonator or Detonator II model. It was a black guitar with gold hardware that included a Floyd Rose whammy. It had a model 81 Bridge and a Model 89 neck (i.e., Gold EMG lettering) and also a single coil EMG in the middle position. I also owned a white S281 a while back that had the a set of 85/81 with a boost circuit. I presently have a beauty of a blond Brian Setzer flame maple top solidbod Bluesbird with binding, neck and inlays similar to a Nightbird. It looks to have a set of 85/81's. (I kind of like the EMG strat size single coils.)

Thanks Mike

I had contacted EMG and they told me that they had not kept good records in those days... and asked what color the lettering was.. So White Lettering = EMG 81/85 Good info.

My first NB ('91 amberburst) had a pair of EMG 60s. My second NB ('87 ebony -- aah, sweet ebony, I miss that one) had Armstrongs. My third NB ('91 amberburst) had gold Guild HBs. My current NB ('87) most likely had EMGs (gone when I bought it) and I put gold cover, no pole pieces, Bartolinis in them. You can see pictures of them if you search my name -- just a handful of posts to sort through.

I wasn't a fan of any of the original pickups.
