Hi all,

I just joined after searching all over the internet to find more information on my friend's guitar. My friend, who is in his 70's and doesn't have a cell phone or internet access, asked me to do the research. He received the guitar from a friend years ago and believed it's a Crue X-88. He wanted me to confirm and give him an idea of how much it's worth.

After much searching, I was able to finally find a Crue that looks like his (tuning pegs on one side) on this site.

Here's a photo I took of his.

Does anybody have an idea how much this guitar is worth?

Thanks!

That's not an X88 Crue - it's an X82 Nova.

They're fairly uncommon but not exactly rare, especially with that headstock.

FWIW an X88 Crue looks like this:

Notice the very sharp points. An X82 has much more subdued points:

Worth depends on condition. '80s Guild electrics don't often sell for much, but I've seen X82s in excellent condition go for say $600-1200.

For the blonde one I paid $853
For the red one I paid $775

Neither are mint, but I haven't seen a mint one if forever.

I owned a "purple" one years back with the offset headstock similar to years. My neck was a bolt-on. I'm pretty sure the symmetric headstock models are set-neck models. Is your guitar a bolt-on or set-neck model?

How can I tell? I looked at the back and I did not see a bolt.

So it was in the same 1984 flyer:

Thanks!

So it has the Kahler, and the two EMG pickups? Or are they Pacific? How can I tell? And based on the above, with the EMG's the list price would be $1,075.

Bolt-on necks have a metal plate on the back with four screws.

Thanks!

Your friend's guitar appears to have EMG pick-ups as they have solid covers. California pick-ups have "exposed" bobbins and are in this guitar:

If you look closely at GAD photos you can still see the EMG lettering on the covers. This lettering often gets worn off.

Yup, his has the 4 screws. And good to know it's EMG pick-ups. Thanks!

So I spoke to my friend and he definitely wants to sell the Guitar, any suggestion as to the best place? My friend lives in upstate NY and I live in NYC and I noticed a Gitar Store near me in NYC has sold this model in the past. I assume the Guitar will bring a better price if I sell it online?

If you say "hi", or "nice guitar!" in four more posts (for a total of 10 posts), you can advertise it here on LTG.

Other options would include Reverb or Craigslist.

Maybe. Guitars typically fetch more when sold in a reputable guitar shop because the purchaser can try the guitar in person, and the shop backs the guitar with its reputation. But a seller might actually net more if sold online (Reverb or eBay) since there will be a larger pool of prospective purchasers, and the fees are much less than a consignment fee. But then you also have to deal with shipping, return policies, etc.

Selling on this forum is often ideal, since you have a strong concentration of persons interested in Guild guitars, and if the deal is consummated, a small donation to the site is all that is expected.

Thanks for the suggestions! To be honest I like the guitar and would think about buying it myself if I didn't already have 3 I rarely play.

Donations for deals that don’t close here are also accepted.
