X 50 Truss Rod?

I am looking at a 1958 (ser#7848) X-50 that doesn't have a truss rod. Owner says that some Guilds came without truss rods. Seems odd to have a cover and not something under it. My guess is that it broke and came out. Any ideas? I think I might have to pass unless some how it's true that some came without truss rods.

Sounds extremely odd and not very credible to me, but I'm willing to be corrected by them as knows better.
