so this last saturday I found a guild G 212 serial # 100214 at a pawn shop. The neck looked to be strait and playable action not to bad. However there were three cracks on the face running from the bridge to the bottom. A crack from the sound hole running up to the neck next to the pick guard. Also what looks like a crack running about 6" below the head stock on the back of the neck. And one crack on the side 4" long. Just wonder'in if this would be worth saving. I enjoy my guild and thought about saving this one but thought that I would give it a week to think about it.
Thanks for any and all input.
There are many others on this board who can answer your question much better than I can...but there were some questions that came to my mind:
•How does it sound?
•Are the cracks separated to the point that there is an uneveness between the two parts of the crack; how much light can you see through them?
•Have braces been compromised because of the cracks?
•What is the cost of the guitar (important part of the forumla my son frequently uses, "is the juice worth the squeeze?")
•Do you have a good luthier who you trust to do the work?
•Have you had any similar work done so you have an idea about the cost?
Is a Guild G212 worth saving? I'd say yes, especially since you're mainly dealing with cracks which probably can be repaired and stabilized. (I recently had a nasty very long crack repaired on the back the neck on my D55 and have had various cracks repaired over the years on all my guitars.) To me the question would be "approximately what will it cost me to have it put back together and when it's done will I be ahead of the game (exceptional sound, satisfaction or rescue, final cost etc) than if I had just waited and bought the same type of guitar without all the issues?" If your answer is "yes" then "the juice is worth the squeeze"
so...how's that for answering a question with a bunch of questions?
happy pondering...jgm
