West,
Seriously, I really admire people who can work on these guitars, whether to restore them or just to salvage them. In this case, maybe a luthier could somehow plug those holes with wood and then cover the sides and back with a very thin veneer.

But is there anyway you could get a Guild plastic peghead overlay?

Terry,
Where did you see this?

I think it might look half-way pleasing if it had tuners on it that were sympathetic towards a slotted headstock style.

In fact, after another look, I don't think it would look too bad at all.

People customize guitars, guys. It's been going on since day one.
Some custom jobs mightn't be very aesthetically-pleasing to the beholder / purist, and I would certainly never do anything that radical, but hey, as John said ; "Whatever gets you through the night".

In NZ slang, do "custom," "customize," and "custom job" mean something dirty? If so, then this guitar is customed up.

Couldn't say Darryl; I've lived a sheltered life.

But I can tell you that a Costume Job can be thoroughly therapeutic if partaken of !

You guys are gonna think I'm nuts, but I think it's great!

What kind of mind would think to do that inside-outwards kinda Mickey Mouse job? It's so obvious how to properly install these tuners, but this person has some how seen the whole thing completely differently--and it works!

I'd love to walk around this person's house and see how he/she has customized the toaster oven, or vacuum cleaner, or how shelving is hung, etc.

This is the type of person who will either come up with a new cheap alternative energy source or who will rebuild a perfectly good car so that it works perfectly fine, except it goes backwards in all forward gears and vice versa. :D

Makes me think of Pat and Mat

If that's a customisation, It's a bit sad it happened to a guitar with the old style Chesterfield inlay. Even so, guitars are improved on and customised continuesly and a guitar you paid thousands for isn't worth the set of strings on it if you can't use it.

I'm curious what might have happened to the axe prior this conversion or what else might have called for this most unorthodox transformation.
