Here's a pic of a slide I made from a blue wine bottle. I made the brass one as well, although it was when I was just starting to experiment and paid less attention to detail. The others, for reference, are store bought, a chrome Dunlop, a clear Dunlop and a Joe Perry ceramic boneyard.

Nice assortment there. Great job on the wine bottle too. How did you get the break so clean?
I've been playing with a solid brass slide, heavy, passed on from a friend, but I have been meaning to try to make a glass slide. That boneyard looks cool too! That is just an inspiring photo. :D

Thanks for the interesting post Mr. Moon, and the information about using a Dremel. I bought one not too long ago and frequently wonder how I ever did without it ! Matter of fact, I'm partway through cutting an (electric) pick guard with it ........ such an easy job.

I'd love to have a shot at making a glass slide or two. I've bought a couple of slides off this bloke .... http://www.diamondbottlenecks.com/DB08/index.asp ......... and he informed me that one of the very best bottle necks to use is that off a 750cl Mateus Rose bottle. Of course, I cannot find one anywhere !

This might have no relevance here but I'll mention it.

I used to soak a bit of string (something around 3mm diameter) in metho, tie it around a glass bottle where I wanted it to separate. Light the string and after a little bit put it straight into a bucket of water. If it worked out well, the bottle would separate perfectly where the string was tied. Then use abrasives to smooth/shape.

Do they make a Laphroaig bottle with a straight neck?
 Sadly, No. Looks like I'm also on the hunt for a bottle of Mattuse Rose.

Dunno if it makes it to your part of the world, but the spelling I am used to is "Mateus". That might make it easier to find.

The blue one is for sure cool . Aside from the coresidin bottle (sp) one of the best slides is to go to Sears tool dept . The deep( ling ) sockets for spark plugs etc are great slides, although heavier, you just find one that fits the finger u use & viola! great tone too!

Yeah, I have a deep well socket in by bag o slides, however I find them a bit slower to use and heavy at one end due to the extra weight you get with the metal mass at the closed end, as compared with an open ended metal tube.

With glass that thickness and diameter, you can actually take a 3 cornered file and file a straight line around about half the bottle neck, then spit of the cut and break the bottle in you hands. (I'd use gloves).

We do this with sight glasses at work quite often and I have been for over 30 years......works like a charm on that glass. The glass we use for sight glasses is probably a bit thinner than most bottle glass, about 1/8" as I recall, but I'd think it still might work. Definately not for something Coke bottle thickness. I'll also admit that I haven't done this in a few years. :)
