It's funny, as you started the thread, I had just started shopping for an amp ;] Something with a fair amount of clean headroom. I browsed around the net, quickly figured out I didn't like much of anything that's out there, and then I remembered I restored an 80's MIJ Roland Spirit 50 that wasn't too bad and had a raft of 1/4 jacks all in the front, perfect for my layout. I need a headphone jack, and a line out for recording quietly through headphones.
Dragged its heavy 32lb mass into the house from my summer music shed, let it warm up a few hours, hooked it all up. And Bingo, great cleans and takes pedals very well. The Roland speaker might be ok for Jazz, but absolutely unbearable otherwise. The only jack this amp doesn't have is speaker out, so I disconnected the 12" speaker - which desperately needs to be replaced with something, light preferably, like neodymium - and fed it into my trusty ADDROCK ported 2x12 with a pair of 70's Marshall branded Celestion 25 watters that sound quite amazing and it sounds great. 2 16Ω speakers = 8Ω cabinet.
Even better through my Sennheiser HD420 headphones, dreamy cleans, great spring reverb. The overdrive channel is completely useless, but it got me to break out my old tube dinosaur SIB Varidrive, and holy deliciousness. Best tone I've had in a long time. Reverb is good enough for me to sh*can my reverb pedal, current being a Mad Professor Silver Spring which is quite good actually.
This is all with the SF-4. I'm tailoring all my gear around this one. I needed cleaner cleans, and cleaner overdrive as well.
The dynamic range of the SF-4/HB1's is really extreme. Turns out you don't need a lot of overdrive at all, it's when you dig in really hard that all the magic happens.
This is the Roland. Rare enough I've never been able to replace the 3rd knob from left, Master Vol with Pull Presence.
I picked this up at a pawn shop the summer I joined up here, 2016. Not often you see a cool old amp any more, and this one got run over probably, fixed it ;]
