I am not a PRS fan. I just don't get it. Here's a story that likely adds some color as to why:
A VP for the CNC machine company that PRS uses lives in my town. His son was in the local music store (sadly now gone) getting lessons while I was there, and he brought in a guitar that he "got to keep". It was a Private Stock that had a price tag of $16,000 and was absolutely beautiful to look at. It was also one of the most uninspiring lifeless guitars I've ever played.
Now, sure I can be an elitist snob, but this was a "top of the line" PRS! I expected a chorus of angels, but to me it felt no different than a $500 Epiphone. Honestly I've liked every Newark St. Guild I've played more than I liked that PRS.
I don't know... maybe I was somehow jaded by the fact that he brought it in from the car by just carrying it by the neck. You see, he had brought it from home and just threw it in the back seat of his car without a case. I think the guitar was lifeless because it just couldn't bear to live having been treated like that. It had probably been hanging on his wall as art with crusty old strings.
Anyway, I know a lot of people love 'em, so they can't be all bad, but all the ones I've played felt lifeless and dull.
BTW IIRC the one he had looked a lot like this:
