I'm assuming the back is arched Brazilian rosewood like @chazmo's old F50R?

Yes - in fact we think the backs are from the same flitch of veneers. They appear to match. I also played an archback F-50R here in the L.A. area that appeared to be from the same flitch.

Here's a fuzzy picture of the front of AE-176 in about 1968; not long after I got it. Note the non-original Grover "whopper" tuners. I don't know what the originals looked like, but suspect the stock chrome '60s strips. The shop where I bought AE-176 is still in business, and I assume the sale record is still in "the book" (handwritten shop-serial-numbered record of all sales in the shop). I hope that book has not been lost. An aside - the luthier (David Millard) who worked there in those days just went back to work there after retiring from school teaching.

Hey Hans....is the owner thinking of selling? ;)
