I hate to say, but it really seems to drag

I was only familiar with the Nazareth version, though I had no idea who it was by, and never interested in it, and I learned that, even by the wonderful Everly Brothers I don't like that song

A couple more versions of Love Hurts.
Firstly, Jim Capaldi, the Traffic drummer. A UK top five single.

Secondly, by The Majestics, a fictional band from the TV drama series "Tutti Frutti", with vocals by Maurice Roeves, an excellent character actor.

Actually better than I remember it being! The series was a major breakthrough for it's stars Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson.

The "shades of Michael Bolton" over emoting kill that version. As does the enstupidification of a mildly clever lyric puts that one in the dustbin for me.

Gram and Emmy Lou are perfect for the song. The Everlies are great as always, but it sounds like they didn't take enough time on.the instrumental arrangement.
The Gram and Emmy Lou version is a seminal moment in country music.

I believe Tom and the gang elevated it quite a bit with the rearranged structure, harmonica, vocal harmonies and piano/organ.

First version of Love Hurts I could actually enjoy listening to all the way through! Jim Capaldi, hooray!😲👏

I never heard Mayer's version before, I like it! But for me the Petty original will always be "better"...

BTW, I do a version of this song myself, and I can say with confidence that both of these versions are better than mine...

How about this comparison, Elvis(live and studio versions)vs a supergroup of blues greats vs the original:

Green Bullfrog’s version is on here only they don’t have it by itself, scoured everywhere. Well you’ll have to work for this one, if you ffwd to the 6:12 mark, it’s totally worth it though(heck the whole album smokes!)

The original artist Lloyd Price’s version:

Hard not to love any song a seemingly happy and healthy Elvis did on the '68 Comeback Special...

Original - OutKast

Cover - Obadiah Parker

I’ll take the Outcast tune all day. It’s too fun of an upbeat party tune to be turned into a dirge. Plus, in recent years it’s become a club gimmick for solo acoustic acts to do a cover of things that make audience members go “huh??”…from gangsta rap to girl pop…tunes the performers themselves wouldn’t ever regularly listen to. Low hanging fruit IMO. It’d be like a death metal band doing a cover of the Monkees!

But….what this cover does highlight at its core is what brilliant songwriting Andre from OutKast is capable of. 👍🏻

The original…Simon and Garfunkel…America.

Which I adore…..But…I consider this cover one of the best covers/reimagining of any song ever covered….Including Hendrix/Dylan Watchtower!

In 71, during Bill Bruford’s last tour w/ the band, this tune was a live staple, and IMO, they knocked it miles out of the park!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 (That breakdown section is just sick as can be!!)

Btw, Yes musically reference 3-4 other America musical themed pieces in their rendition. 😉
