well, i always thought that actual musicians and performers are in the know that Guild is the best value out there.
so many use Guilds that you never even knew...

and no one can touch the used market like Guild acoustics can.
just take the D25 arched for example. they are out there to be had and assuming in good shape with a pickup, a musician can literally get their D25 in morning and play it later that night. with no concern really about it getting beat up etc. And the tone will be that old world vintage mojo woody tone that we all seem to strive for...

they are indeed made to be played.

i am glad i stumbled upon Guild. took me a long long time. but at least I made it. :)

ultimately, i think people that finally "get" Guild, that in itself is an accomplishment.

btw Brad, I dig the updated avatar...

I agree that musicians generally know and respect Guilds. I do remember a poster on AGF who said maybe Guild didn't get respect because Martin, Taylor, and Gibson had been around longer! Numerous AGFers jumped all over that.

what’s odd is Taylor didn’t show up until the 70’s or so. I don’t know when they broke into the mainstream but by that time Guild had been around a couple decades yet it seems Taylor is more well known even though as with anything that isn’t a Martin (nothing wrong with a good Martin.) you get the occasional nay sayer. But I suppose there wouldn’t be much to discuss if we all used the same thing. I like Guilds because the Westerly stuff in my experience has always been good with no real “bad years” that I could see yet I can scoop some up for under a grand if I’m patient. I’m a terrible cheapskate though.

But I think it’s a good thing counterfeit Guilds is pretty rare and when you do see one it’s so painfully obvious it’s a fake that you wouldn’t mistake one for a real one unless you never seen a Guild. The ones I seen thus far and badly relabeled Ibanez or Alvarez guitars, usually on the lower end.

I have a very nice Taylor that sits in the closet -- its main problem: no personality, unlike all my Guilds.

That’s a common complaint I heard. I never played any that I can recall so I wouldn’t know.

Taylor wasn’t even born until the mid ‘70s, and then took many years to become established via steady & savvy ownership. Unfortunately at the same time, Guild went through multiple ownership changes & struggled to maintain their presence in the market - even while continuing to build fine instruments in the Westerly facility.

It was sad to watch Guild fade into the background. I had high hopes for a major resurgence when Fender bought the company in ‘95, but then the factory-hopping exercise ensued & the brand never truly seemed to be a top priority for them. Today, it feels like Cordoba is making a serious effort & is on the right track.

The number of Guilds for sale online is staggering. I think they're far from fading, in fact more like peaking in popularity.
