Oh, wait a minute, there were only a few actual musicians on the show, my bad. At least John Prine got some love. Eddie Van Halen was pretty much ignored - 15 second clip.

Although if you like soft porn, they did have some of that...

It seems to me music is only a small part of today’s pop scene. Image, attitude and social media presence are much more important.
A John Prine clip must have stood out like a mountain amongst all those gopher mounds...

Older generations not understanding modern pop music is nothing new. That said award shows have never been about the best musicians.

There’s a thread over on TGP where they’re all endlessly arguing about how great/terrible John Mayer was. Nothing gets them riled up like John Mayer.

The 12 people who watched thought Cardi B did in fact have a WAP.

and some Jazz greats: Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper

And Chick Corea got some love too.

Maria Schneider's Data Lords won - I've been listening to it since I got it on ArtistShare last July. Interesting work for large jazz ensemble. I hope to hear it live some day.

Yay for Snarky Puppy ! As Mark Lettieri said, they are not so much a band as a sports team number of players.

Some of these TV events try to get you to watch for the commercials they'll show, like Football. I didn't watch the Grammys, so what type of commercials were they pushing Mr. Clean?

Glad that Billy Strings got recognized, he is probably the "next big thing' or is already, in the bluegrass realm. Gotta have the kids coming up ;)

This is true. The goal of a lot of these artists to be a celebrity, and to build a "brand".

Thinking about it, the Grammys have never had much relevance for me. Occasionally a great artist is recognized, but usually it’s some pop schlock that sold a lot of records, or CD’s, or whatever.

I've given up on any of these big pop culture extravaganza shows. Sure there are little tiny flecks of what I consider to be talent here and there but the majority it is catered to a type of person whose entertainment preferences I simply do not understand and have given up trying. Of course, everybody is welcome to consume whatever they want and I certainly don't expect people to like what I like. Surely I have a lot more to say on the topic, but unfortunately it's tough to do that nowadays without getting into the realm of the political, so I will avoid that out of love and respect for this forum.
