I know, it’s not summer yet but to me strawberry picking in New England kicks things off. From today’s haul…

And don’t forget the Reddi Wip!

Those berries look really good! With apologies to our in-state growers, over the past few years Florida grown strawberries have taken a tremendous decline in quality and I no longer buy them. They are probably picked too soon. Almost a third of the berry will be green or white, they have almost no taste, and are not sweet at all. Strawberries should not require dousing with sugar to be made edible.

Too bad what we have in the stores doesn't look like what you have on your plate!

To be able to pick them when perfectly ripe means they must be consumed within maybe 2, 3 days to get the maximum flavor and consistency. Same with some other local fresh fruit and veggies. They have a short shelf life. It is an amazing treat that I look forward to this time of year.

Cynthia, it was the same in Southern California. Moving back to LA from up in Ventura County where so much produce was grown, I really missed the farmer's roadside stalls with fresh produce. Ripe, red, sweet and soooo tasty. What you buy in the stores is really awful. No point really.

I often feel sorry for people who have to eat vegetables and berries from grocery stores, as often as I see the stuff, which is not often.

Tough year for berries so far here, very little sun but lots of rain.

Is there anything better than fresh hot sweet corn with butter salt and pepper?

Local peaches!
I love fresh ripe peaches! I want trees!

My sister's sweetie grew up in peach country. His family has orchards and he hates peaches. I can't imagine not liking peaches. They are so good, and the best ones have so much juice it drips off your chin and elbow while you're eating them.
