What do you do with your old strings?

For all you string changers out there, do you do anything with your old strings?

I looked at guitar string jewelry pictures, made from used guitar strings. Some of it is quite remarkable. Some of it is even quite pricey. I don't know what other uses creative people have come up with but it's good that some of them are getting a second go 'round.

I'm tempted to try my hand at it but for now my projects plate is pretty full.

Interesting, can you please post a picture of this jewelry? I just give used strings to general metal recycling - I guess I'm not too creative besides music...

Here's just one site. There are lots. Some on Etsy, some on Pinterest. Most are very good while a few look like I would expect my efforts to look.

Leave them on a bass :)

Keep them in a drawer in case I want them on another bass.

Give the Guild set, with original packaging from the 70's, to @The Guilds of Grot for his museum.

Jewelry idea is kind of cool but only for people who wear jewelry.

I recycle them.

I'm not sure if West will see this, but am I remembering correctly that his wife made a flower-like design out of them and put them in vases around the houses? I can't find it with a search, and the photos may be gone anyway, it was a while ago. IF I'm remembering correctly!

I will PM him and see if it was him, maybe he can post some photos if so.

I recycle them too. I heard a while back there is someone who takes them and refurbishes them for those that can’t afford strings so they are repurposed. I forget the website.

My used strings are too grungy to use for anything else, I just put them in the recycling.

I'm up to five string changes in three mornings.

I've commonly just recycled them, I probably have a couple lbs in a bag right now.

I hate the job of changing strings, but I love the result!

When you guys talk about recycling, are you saying there's some sort of re-use of the strings after the process, or are you talking about metal recycling?

I'm a little grossed out at the thought of my used-up strings somehow getting reused on someone else's guitar. Eew.

Nae sure it's worth the bother of joining the "Players Circle", wife also uses them in basketry, the wound strings make decent bailing wire I suppose.

I had no idea that Daddario takes care of the shipping end of the player circle prizes. Heck I had no idea they started it up again! I have some points saved up but kind of abandoned it more or less. I probably could’ve won like 3 stools by now. Does Daddario care if it wasn’t their brand of strings I was recycling? Sometimes the shop runs out of Daddarios so I end up buying Martin strings.

Well that answers my question. It’ll take me forever to accumulate 40 sets of strings! I think I had some on my D-35 for six months until I got tired of its sound being heavily degraded by cruddy thuddy strings! I try to make it a habit to do it once a month to keep a balance of not wasting strings/money and having a decent clear tone.
