You know, I never chased after the spotlight. My primary goal with playiing guitar and singing is still "to have fun." I just hope to leave a legacy of good music for my friends and family, and have fun doing it. Accordingly, I am doing a bunch of recording on my Tascam, including songs I have written. That is all.

I don’t have any currently. Just to keep playing as long as I can. Serving when I can.

I guess one musical dream of mine is that one of my kids would be into guitar. Like I would love it if 2 of my kids took to the dreads.

Can you imagine playing like George Benson, Tal Farlow, Chet Atkins, Roy Buchanan, Glenn Campbell or Mark Knopfler?

Having that kind of inane proficiency, playing anything, anywhere, never making a mistake.

In my dreams.

My playing has always been one step forward, two steps back...

I have been playing for almost 50 years now. I think I can truthfully say that I have the chops of a three year old Chimpanzee.
My writing and lyrics arn't as advanced.

My goals ,over the last few years, are to learn the instrument as a musician not just a chord strum-er and to get comfortable playing in front of others. Unless my voice heals a lot, there will be no singing. I've spend the last three years with an instructor focused on Jazz stuff and I can improvise some sort of solo over lots of keys, but I haven't learned any exact solos from any song. I need to add that to the list. When people say, " Oh, you can play? Play me something, I need to be able to play something they recognize. I can't very well say, " Hum me a few bars of a 2-5-1 turnaround and I'll come up with something. "

i Fully agree with you. For me playing is fun, relaxing and de-stressing- . Writing a text and sometimes making a song (feels like writing in your diary) learns me how absolutely limited my capacities are, but like sports ; everybody should do it on his/her own level. So no competition... just accept and enjoy. Experiencing degradation of my ears is less funny, but ..(I guess I’m not the only one) . I love listening to uploads you guys do on the forum. All the different styles and different qualities and always positive reactions from other LTG members! .. thx for coming up with this item dreadnut ! Keep playing!

Another thing I've been working on and I have it down pretty well now - fingerpicking with no figerpicks, just thumb and fingers. Interestingly, only my thumb nail works as a pick; the rest of my fingernails didn't hold up to this so I have just built up callouses on them for picking.

My ultimate goal is to play well enough to be listed as the #1 guitarist of all time across all musical genres and playing styles, acoustic and electric.

Until then I want to be able to play Puff the Magic Dragon from memory for my grand nephews.

I would say I likely have a ways to go before I reach my ultimate goal; probably gonna take a couple more weeks of practice. 😁

I'm just having fun, and trying to get little better each year. These days, playing pretty much for myself. Playing guitar is a great stress reliever, sometimes I find myself just smiling after a sweet chord sequence or a little riff, it's so enjoyable. Learning new songs and digging out old ones from my "repertoire" helps keep me relaxed and sane.

I haven't picked up a guitar, other than to move the case in over a year.
Just to enjoy playing again would be good enough. Doing some home recording would be a plus.

Dreadnut,

Funny thing is I have gone practically all fingers even on electric guitars, al a Mark Knopfler. I'll grab a flat pick if I need a sharper attack, but that removes some techniques from the quiver. Like plucking a string for a more funky sound. I will through on a thumb pick for some tunes that I am finger picking and the bass part is over whelmed by the high strings. But for the most part, it's fleshy fingers for me.

Nice topic Dreadnut! Maybe what I love most about playing music is that it gets me out of my left brain. I don't play out - I'm not good enough and I'm too self conscious. My duo partner and I write songs individually and show up and play in my basement studio - the song writer on rhythm and vocals and the other guy improvising on lead. We get to be the players and the audience, emphasis on audience. We record everything on the mixer, and if I have a goal, it's to make a good album of live takes. Good judged by me. Of course, recording reveals the shortcomings of our performances. And recently and reluctantly I've started scripting and practicing lead parts to his songs in my solo time instead of just showing up and improvising. Turns out it's fun to premeditate lead parts, actually helps me think less playing live, and makes for better recordings. Now if singing practice was only as fruitful.....

A suggestion I had from a very good singer I knew was to record yourself singing every day. Then listen to the recording. That was his number 1 technique. You won't like it, but you will either get better or quit singing.
