Today, after sanding the wooden chair with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface, I noticed that support struts running from leg to leg that I had re-glued into position had loosened, so I decided to re-attach them with no.6 wood screws.
I purchased a 3/32" bit, some no.6x 1-3/4" screws, drilled and counter-sunk holes, re-seated the struts in their respective holes using a rubber mallet, and tightly screwed the assembly together.
Then some additional coats of paint to cover the bare wood re-exposed by the sanding.
Just one decision left to make.
Do I apply a clear coat of lacquer to protect the finish, or leave it as is?
By way of full disclosure, if I could start again from scratch, I would simply sand the chair and otherwise leave it in the raw, weathered condition I found it, and apply a clear coat to seal it.
Live and learn.
