nice to meet you. and thanks for lettin me join.

i m Seiki living in japan and pretty new here.

Question about westerly D55.
I bought 81s D55 2 years ago from an American on reverb. and been wondering about coated finish inside even on the bracings.

the pictures may be hard to see tho. u can see a bit shiny wood materials there.
I think this finish might be shellac but even the seller was not sure about this.

Anyone have same type??
or Is it normal or default in that era?
any idea please

by the way, its inside smells good.

Welcome aboard, Seiki.

I don't think Guild finished the insides of their acoustic guitars, but maybe a previous owner did that. It's a little hard to tell from the pictures, but maybe you can wipe a section of that down with a moist cloth to look a little more closely.

We'll see if anyone has more to add on the subject.

Welcome Seiki! I've never seen such a thing before. I'm fairly certain it didn't come from the factory that way. The label looks like it's been taken off and reapplied as well. Not sure why anyone would do this, but I guess the wood would be impervious to losing moisture? No need to humidify it, if that's even a problem in Japan. I'll wait to see what others have to say.

Welcome to LTG Seiki, and I'll concur with the others that have said that it almost certainly didn't leave the factory that way. I don't think it can hurt though. Does the guitar sound good otherwise?

Hello Seiki,

Welcome! The finish on the inside of the back (and also on the top) was done during specific periods.
It's a sealer that was sprayed on braced tops and braced rosewood backs. The idea was to minimize swelling and shrinking from humidity.
The sealer is not always that clearly visible though. Here's a photo of the inside of a GF-60 that shows it rather well.

It was done at the factory in an earlier stage when the back and the top were still separate from the rim.

As far as the GF60 is concerned, it is not mine, but I had one at some point and it was a great guitar.
