All jokes aside ... if you are sitting in or are working as an emergency replacement and you don't know the set lists, arrangements, or even all the tunes all that well, be nice to the bass player. Stand next to the bass player. The bass player, functioning in the netherworld that is an intersection between harmony and rhythm, generally knows more about what is happening in any tune than anyone else in the band. The bass player is your safety net.

Old band mate of mine, guitarist Brian Ray, stuck with it, eventually played with Etta James for 10 years. Then he got a call from Paul McCartney asking if he could occasionally play bass as well as backing him on guitar. No problem for Brian. First gig: the Superbowl.

There are real drummers, and then there are people who like to hang around with musicians. These two groups are not the same, although you often find the second group behind a kit.

There are real bass players, and then there are people who weren't very good at playing guitar and were given a bass to hold. These two groups are not the same either.
