Was my guitar the "prototype" for the M240E?

I got this several years ago from Clark's Music. It has the early M40 DeArmond pickup with the straight sided V/T control. It's not pristine--it has a retouched top which shows wear and repair, binding redone on the front but not the back, but it's my go-to songwriting guitar and is incredibly loud for its size. It has the initials "P.G." written inside the back
in the same "India ink?" and style as on the label. Was there a "P.G." working at Guild back in 1956? This and my 1965 F212 are my 2 favorite flat top guitars.

So...I have a question for Hans...would the (S) indicate that this was perhaps a factory special order? From what I've been able to tell from the internet, this version of the DeArmond pickup should have existed in 1956, so...?

I would guess "S" would mean special order or special run. My D65S indicates that 20 were made. But that was in 1994. This is a super way early guitar. Can't wait to see what Hans says.......

I know you've seen it before, Ralph. But here's a few shots and even one of the label.

I probably shouldn't clutter up this persons thread with photos of my guitar..... whoops!! GC in the serial number means a special run for Guitar Center. It's a G45 (Hank Williams Jr.) with a plain pickguard, the neck of a D55, some fancy tuners, #11 of 20, and the top of the label signed by the then President of Guild Guitar Company.

Maybe the President also signed the nice and neat model and serial number. That there is some Guild goodness.

That (S) was written with another pen compared to the label script, so was written on the label later on.

I agree. That "S" could mean anything, and/or might not even have been written by a Guild employee. This and the "P.G." make it an interesting mystery!
