Was my guitar refinished or over-sprayed?

Hello all,

I just sold my F112 Tobacco burst but the buyer is now questioning if it was refinished or over-sprayed. It was not to my knowledge, but I've not owned another Westerly era burst, and have not seen another Westerly Tobacco burst so want to ask your opinions. He is a very fine college age player and though he bought this in person I don't want to sour him on Guilds if it was refinished or over-sprayed and I was not aware of it. I am pointing him to this thread so he can read your opinions first hand.

In particular he is questioning a finish bubble in the upper bass bout and the dark but glossy finish over the rosette. The latter I assume is from Westerly lacquering over the rosette and 40 years of aging. The bubble, who knows, but I've seen this before on other old guitars and its never been a concern. These are his phone pics:

Here is my Reverb listing with additional pics.

I am no expert on finish materials. But I have owned many, many vintage guitars. Nitrocellulose lacquer, which is the finish on this guitar, has many virtues. Aging isn't necessarily one of them. I have seen finish bubnles, cracks, haze etc. on much newer nitro instruments. I cannot tell from the photos of this instrument was oversprayed. I am not sure it matters.
Hopefully someone with a better eye, and more Luther knowledge can take a peek.
( It also seems to me that your listing went above and beyond in regards to pictures etc. It looks like a beautiful vintage instrument.)

Here are couple other examples of Guild bursts (from a quick look thru reverb) from the late 70s-early 80s where rosette is covered to different extents by the dark tinting of the burst:

Not an expert, but I would not think that is any indication of a refinish of overspray.

Looks like the original finish to me. As already said, they sprayed over the rosette and this is a typical dark tobacco sunburst from the time. Also NC lacquer changes over time and yellows substantially over time on the impact of UV light.

On my F212CSB - which I bought new - the sunburst darker shade covers some of the rosette, too. So I'd concider that a feature - not a fault.

Hi folks thanks for your insight and opinions. I and the buyer are more comfortable that this is original finish. Just typical old NCL.

I’m hoping he will join the forum as this is his first Guild and he’s a talented finger picker who likes open tunings. Quite possibly a budding Glenn Jones...? :)
