Anyone have a good guess as to why I can't post the actual videos anymore?

I have always had to upload the videos to some platform to get a link, like youtube or soundcloud etc. I was never able to post straight mp4 file etc. That would be a great feature.

I pulled this out of the Song Title Thread because the answer might be worth elevating out of the clutter.

The first question is are you using the exact same device in the hospital as you are at home?

You often seem to do a Bing search and then select a link from the search results, copy that selection and then paste it to LTG. LTG often has difficulty deciphering that and what gets displayed is just a highlighted URL that is several lines long. You might consider clicking on the Bing search result and going to the site with the information. If you then copy the URL and paste it to LTG you might get better results.

You can tell LTG that something is Media (i.e. video) but LTG won't recognize or believe that unless it comes from a specific list of sites. Bing is not on that list but YouTube (for example is) so again, the issue seems to be what you are pasting.

What I'm not sure about is the "anymore". If you're not doing something different I'm not sure why things are working differently.

At the moment LTG does not allow MP4 as an uploadable file type. I just uploaded a MP4 from my local computer and the browser sent it to LTG just fine and then LTG gave an Oops message. This is probably an @GAD question. He might be able to add MP4 to a list of allowed file types or it may be that whoever wrote the software refused to support MP4 because at various times aspects for the format were considered proprietary. There's probably some subtle distinction between attaching a file and having a link to a file embedded in a post and the software displays a preview of what is embedded.

I don’t believe we’ve ever been able to upload a video direct to the forum. It’s always had to be on some platform like YouTube, etc. It’s only under the GAD regnancy that we’ve been able to upload photos without hosting elsewhere, IIRC.

Seems like it wasn't all that long ago (less than 15 yrs) that most internet forums wouldn't even internally host pictures. Moderators/admins would regularly tell users their avatar pic was too big, or to purge your pm boxes to clear space. (I started collecting live music on 250/500 mb Zip drives!! ($$$$) We now live in a world of cheap mass data storage, but it still doesn't mean privately run sites like this can just freely host countless HD videos and such. If you want that, expect ad banners to follow. There's a reason why YouTube is now filled w/ ads. A million people uploading 30 min HD videos every day. That is an insane amount of storage!! ($$$$$)

Whether justified or not, at one point the inability to host files on LTG was also driven by liability concerns. If someone posted porn or copyrighted material, for example, and law enforcement became involved it was not always clear whether the poster, host service or both were legally liable.

Videos are not allowed for upload as they take up too much space.
