Why are there so many Guilds available with the 'USED" stamp on the back of the headstock? Are these actually defective or is this a way for dealers to reduce price without getting into trouble with Guild. Would you buy one? Does it affect resale value?

Thanks Bud

We already are discussing the issue on another thread, however the official explanation of the "used" print on the headstock is that these guitars were defectictive, and hopefully resent to the factory of Tacoma to be refurbished, then sodl with no warranty.

It also seems that since the contemporary series has been discontinued all the existing unsold stock was printed "used".

I bought one and if I made a mistake I'll find out soon.

Cuthbert, wishing you the best on your new (USED) contemporary... And, welcome to LTG.

Bud, also, welcome aboard.

To clarify... These guitars with USED on the headstock were built in Tacoma (and some in Corona a few years ago) and then were sent to reclamation centers, such as MIRC, for fixing. In the case of this current flood on the market, I suspect Fender took the remaining guitars at the Tacoma factory as they were shutting down and rather than destroy them (as they did when production left Rhode Island in 2001), they sent them out for reclamation.

Some / most of these reclaimed guitars are just fine. Some have cosmetic blemishes. Others, well... The primary issue here is that we've identified that the Contemporary series had some problems with their necks. A "USED" guitar has no factory warrantee and thus no recourse for you except out of pocket money to fix the guitar if needed. Your savings on buying a "USED" guitar, even if it has no blemishes, has to be weighed against this.
