UPS delivered a new computer yesterday and I had to sign for it. The driver was the fellow who goes to my church that I mentioned in an earlier post. He chatted a little and because I've been following this thread I asked about his job. He has worked for UPS for thirty years and plans to retire in five. Policy is to not to drive into private single family residential drives for liability purposes. Don't want to be backing over kids, dogs, and homeowners. They do have some discretion there though, but it is discouraged. They are tracked, but it is more for security than to watch what they are doing. No one is sitting there watching their every move. If the truck stops moving for an unusual amount of time they start calling to make sure the driver is okay. Otherwise it isnt a big brother thing. There is a lot of pressure on the drivers but they pay "really good" and they reward senority. He says overall he doesn't have any complaints, it is back breaking work but the pay and benefits are good. So, just something to add to the discussion.

That's all good to know. Now the no backing up makes much better sense.

A neighbor of mine just retired from being a UPS driver a few months ago. Extremely pleased with his retirement package, health care options, etc. He did, of course, work very hard for decades, but is now being well taken care of. FYI, UPS drivers are unionized.

Interestingly, he did lament the "younger" employees who "seem to take a lot of days off" which messes up their delivery schedules.

My UPS guy is a gem. The dog adores him, and goes crazy when he sees the big brown truck. He has a golden also, and carries a jug of dog treats. The dog climbs in his truck for his treat if we see him while walking. Packages left on the porch are always topped with a dog biscuit.
