Quick update: I just won an eBay project that has a Franz pickup in it. The project itself (looks like a T-100) will be a doozy, but the T-100 is just about my favorite guitar of all time. I think the pickup will go into my CE-100 project. As I get rolling on the projects, I'll do some updates.

Thanks to all of you who posted pictures as well as gave advice.

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone out there have a picture of the back of an old Franz pickup? I need a decent photo for some identification purposes.

Thanks,
Dean

Re: Need a pickup picture . . .

Thanks! I think that gives me enough info to go on. I'm working on an old CE-100 project, and need to find the right pickup for it.

Walter... any idea what year that Franz is from? The ones in my photo (and others if you follow the link) has different colour leads and squared-off corners on the top of the bobbin. Yours is rounded... interesting details. Mine was from that blonde '59 X-175 I sold.

Yes, 1962. It's not just rounded - if you take a good look you'll see the whole coil "encased" by plastic.
I have two pairs of those, and two pairs of the ones you posted. The later ones I have (like in the pic) are 6K, the earlier ones 5K. They sound about the same though.

Here is another example.... this is a '56 X-175 Franz pickup. Note the braided lead and different terminal strip. Also, since the cover had shrunken, I had to remove the pole pieces in order to remove the pickup from the body of the guitar. This one didn't have any retaining wire threaded through the pole pieces either. It reads about 6.9K!

(I forgot to snap a pic of the top... oops)

I got the guitar in the mail today - here are some shots of the pickup. It's pretty grungy right now, but it will clean up nicely. It measures 5.1 ohms. When I get going on this project, I'll post updates.

I think this pickup will go into my '56 CE-100.
