Musician's Friend/Guitar Center has now picked up Sweetwater's filthy habit of calling to see if you need to purchase anything.

I've never bought from Sweetwater. I have, however, taken advantage of a bunch of "stupid deals of the day" from Musician's Friend and they have had reps calling me for years so it is not a new thing.

I think I even answered the phone one time. SOP is to let unrecognized numbers go to voicemail.

PS. If I liked Martin strings they have a pretty good stupid deal going on today.

A fairly simple solution, if you just tell them that you appreciate their interest but you really don't want them calling you they will stop, both MF and Sweetwater. No need to resort to trickery.

If I'm not mistaken, by law, if you simply tell a marketer to take you off their call list, it'll put an end to it. Marketers have gotten slick though by using automated calls that most people just hang up on. But if you wait out the recorded message, then say " Take me off your call list", it too stops the madness. Nothing was worse than the ridiculous ones about my vehicle's warranty about to expire. 🤬 Blocking numbers also doesn't help. Robocall programs can insert any "calling from" phone number they want, so I was getting calls from what looked like my own company's business line prefixes.

I purchased something from Sweetwater, received a follow up call, answered it, talked to the rep and eventually explained that I did not buy a lot of gear but I had their name and number and would certainly contact them if I was back in the market. I then politely observed "so please don't call me, I'll call you". Haven't heard from them since.

It has been a while since I reviewed all of the telemarketing and unsolicited phone call regulations. At one point the rules were slightly different for cell phones and land lines, a distinction I hope is no longer embedded in regulation but might be. The rules were also different based upon whether it was a "cold call" or a call to an existing customer. So if you get a call from SW or MF after having purchased something they are not doing anything "wrong" until you ask them to stop "marketing calls" and they don't. If you do so they can still call you to tell you that the Surfliner you bought improperly used lead based paint and so is being recalled.

SW calls maybe once a year. They have plenty of gear I want but the prices gotta come way down first. Axes are just too high $ for me these days. So haven’t bought anything in a while. But they have given me good prices and were pleasant to deal with.

Thankfully, we have a land line and my cell phone is only on when I am out of the house.
When we get calls at home, if we don't recognize the call display number, or do, but are not interested in speaking to them, we don't pick up.
Frequent and persistant uninvited callers are a pain in the ass, but even they eventually get the hint and stop calling.

I used to get those US Pharmaceutical calls, auto warranty and fake "police organization" calls every now and then on my cell phone, but since installing Robo Killer, they have pretty much stopped. Also, Verizon now identifies spam calls for you. I still get these calls at home though, and usually don't answer. I also block scams and spam on my land line.
