I thought it seems to be only an optical illusion due to the large outer ring of the rosette.
Now this picture shows the new size, which seems to be exactly 10 cm in diameter.

I double checked with my New Hartford made F-20 and indeed my one only has a 9.2 cm soundhole, so it is 8mm enlarged.

Ralf
If you are going to check how much the soundhole is enlarged you need to compare it with the 'real' thing!

Here's a shot of an F-20 soundhole from the same period and it's 9,6 cm.

I do have a friend that could totally do this and do it successfully. I just don't think it would make enough of a sonic difference that would be worth the risk. It's basically my only acoustic that I play. The Br is wall art for the most part...It really does enhance the room, I got to say.

Thank you Hans, so the soundhole on the replacement top is not much larger than on the original top. (4mm only). I somehow was going to write that I did not have a real F-20 from that period but forgot to mention it. Interesting that the New Hartford GSR F-20 had a slightly smaller soundhole.

Been there, done that. :D

And who knows what other wanton and arbitrary variations in soundhole diameters over the years. Uncovering them all could take forever.

Pickguard from mavuser came today and looks awesome. Now if the case my brother in law sent down from Canada would get itself unlost in the mail, and to the luthier, that would be great. He sent a sound sample but I can’t figure out how to post it.

How exciting! I hope you can figure it out - looking forward to hearing it, and eventually seeing the guitar all finished. Are we there yet?!

Pretty sure the guitar is done or really close. He usually doesn’t do sound samples unless they’re done. The case is in some kind of limbo with no tracking updates since the 15th other than “arriving late but still on the way to the destination”. It’s frustrating.

Unlike pictures you need to host it (upload it to) somewhere else.

Hi all,

This is my first post. Very glad to have found this forum.

When I’m in my hometown I will often visit the shop of my guitar teacher from high school to catch up and see what he’s got. Occasionally I rescue something he doesn’t want to put a lot of work into. Most recently when I was just about to leave, he asked if any of my luthier friends could fix a total wreck of an “old Guild”. I swear I had a psychic moment and thought “I hope it’s a Hoboken F-20.” It was. Unfortunately it had been kicked in during a robbery. It needs a new top, side repair near the end block, a refret, and likely much more. I asked what he needed out of it and he said $50.00. I had just bought a couple packs of strings from him and had $48 left in my wallet which was close enough for him. Long story short I’m having Steve Chipman of vintageparlorguitars.com fix her up to my specs. I’m not going for an original restoration, but more of my idea of how I’d want one of these. Maybe sacrilegious to many of you, but it is what it is. He’s charging an absurdly reasonable amount for all the work it needs, now I just have to explain this to the wife…

Muckman,
Yes, it is very posible that the guitar was deliberately damaged during the robbery, however, it might have been accidently stepped on or stumbled over during the break-in which smashed it.
And while I agree that if simply an act of wanton destruction it was a lousy thing to do, it was assuredly not like assaulting a child, which is far, far worse. And I don't even like small children.

She’s all finished up. I think it sounds great. I’ll reserve judgement on the faux wear back and sides finish until I have it in front of me. I do kinda like that it is a little bit of a hat tip to how she started out when I found her. Wasn’t really going for an exact restoration. I’ll do one of those with Tom I hope when I come across the right F-30.

What an impressive job of restoration! Having made similar attempts, only in much more modest way, I can apprecite the work involved.

And good on you for making the decision to have it done. Hope the guitar more than rewards your efforts!
