In Pete Townshend's autobiography, "Who I Am," he gives a shout out to a very special Guild. Pete's never been a big collector, not like Entwistle or some others, but he talks about selling some of the few special guitars to finance a 46' boat.
I sold a lot of precious guitars to make the deal: two De Angelicos, the Gibson Flying V that Joe Walsh had given me (boy, was he pissed off when he found out), the Guild Merle Travis, a double-neck white Gibson and a few lesser ones.

Nice company for this rare beauty.

What an incredible guitar! Bet he regrets selling that puppy! I'm really looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks for the Quadrophenia tour.

I've said this before, but his autobiography is a highly recommended read!

There were only 3 made. The Travis family has one, Rick Nelson has another, and the guy Pete sold his to. ( From what I could find.)
I don't know if the prototype exists. Hans?

During my research I was told that not more than 5 of these were manufactured, but this was all from memory and the same people turned out to be wrong in other cases. So far I've come across 5 of these Merle Travis guitars, which means that they did at least 5 of them.

Sincerely,

Are the whereabouts of the other two known, or are they still waiting to be found?

Well, I just wrote that I've come across 5 of them, which means that they're already found; ...........but I would not be surprised if I would find another one!
