Been wanting a G-37 for a few years now ever since I bought one as a first Guild only for it to be in worse shape than advertised and shipped poorly so it had a nice foot long crack from the side bottom bout of the guitar upwards so back it went. GC has a pretty forgiving return policy but this one is marked “vintage” so I would have to go over it with a fine toothed comb to make sure nothing was amiss as last time I checked vintage stuff had a 3 day return policy. Took a gamble as with GC the description is as vague as it gets and I have no idea what the neck angle situation is but given their lax return policy I decided to take a shot.

My friend has a '76 G37 that her Dad bought for her for HS graduation; she picked it out at Elderly. We played many Bluegrass gigs with her on that Guild. She has generously passed it along to her son.

An interesting thing is with it being a 77’ it is the only year that I’m aware of where they did the 5 piece maple/rosewood/maple/rosewood/maple neck. Before 77’ it was a one piece mahogany neck and after 77’ it was a 3 piece maple/rosewood/maple neck

I like the looks of it -you dont see that on a neck -
it even feels good to me
Looks like it has a well worn feel which was also a selling point for me. Like a well worn couch!

Congrats, fingers crossed it's a good one!
I believe I've seen 5-piece necks as early as '76 and as late as '78.
Interesting how the necks on these changed around over the years - wondering if
any other Guild models had one, three, and 5-piece necks?

Clarification - was considering acoustic dreads only.
Examples... can't recall seeing a D25 with anything but a one-piece neck,
can't recall a D30 with anything but a 3 piece neck...

I love my G37!! I bought it on GC website too. Hard to find one of these local. It’s the first guitar I reach for, sweet and clear!! Congratulations!

Funny you mentioned because I viewed your thread about yours just now and I believe I recall that very G-37 on the GC website with the missing pickguard. Not sure why I was hesitant to take a chance on it but I think in my mindset and the lack of detailed information and pix GC provided on used stuff I was afraid it would be a basket case seeing it had a missing pickguard even though I seen scratch guards fall off on otherwise healthy guitars and the GC return policy is pretty lax provided I kept in mind it was probably labeled a vintage item and I had like 3 days to go over it with a fine toothed comb to check for any major problems. I am glad that one ended up as a keeper for you. Guess I spooked myself for nothing.

I been comping at the bit for a maple back and sided guitar as pretty much everything I own is spruce and mahogany. So I thought spruce and maple would be a cool change of pace. I did buy a G-37 some years ago off Reverb hoping it would be a good first Guild but unfortunately the condition wasn’t really as described as it had two ugly top cracks that I felt the listing photos were taken at an angle that hides this and they didn’t look like they were properly tended to nor were cleated, shipping damage on the butt end of the guitar and on top of that the bridge was shaved wafer thin and even with that the action had crept up to the point where it begins to become a chore to play. Overall bad experience but luckily I was able to return it and get my money back.

Thanks, definitely a sweet sounding guitar. Don’t get me wrong, it needs some fretwork and a pickguard….not the cleanest one I’ve seen. Somebody played the wheels off of it b/c it just has mojo!

I hope yours works out just as well! Look forward to hearing about it!

Imho, you can't go wrong buying used from GC because of the return policy - and if you have a GC near you, you can bypass shipping hassles & return it in person.

I started buying used & vintage guitars, mandolins, & amps (including my own G-37) from GC when they first started listing them online, and got one screaming deal after another in those early days - typically because they didn't truly know what they had. Lately it seems like they frequently go in the other direction and overprice a lot of items, but if they have what you want and the price is right, you have almost nothing to lose (other than a little time) by taking a shot at it.

Hope you find this one satisfying!

I’m convinced their return policy is so relaxed I could tell them the guitar didn’t match my Sunday best and they’d probably accept the return.

We’ll I’m glad you got it! I was mulling it over and went back to buy it and it was gone! Glad it got a good home. Did get an early JF 4 about 2 days later.
I think it all worked out in the end. Been meaning to snag a Guild jumbo but I don’t know if going from a dreadnaught to a jumbo will be a weird feeling
