... and broke into two pieces, as it is made out of almost hard plastic (why?), that is hard to grap under being riveted tightly to the cover plus becomes brittle with time.

So I replaced it by a little piece of leather in form of a triangle pick:

@TKL: Please forget about this plastic handle 🍋

I was expecting a different story - something coming out of the compartment and damaging the instrument. If it is any consolation something similar has happened on a couple of my cases which are "Guild" cases and decades old. It is not a big problem for me since I live in fear of something in the compartment falling out and scratching an instrument so the compartments are either empty of with things I don't need on a regular basis such as receipts for work.

How could it possibly open with the guitar's neck above it?
IT HAPPENS! It doesn't have to open far to let something like a spare bridge pin (ask Westerly about his burst D-55) or allen wrench (ask me about my D-55!) out! One of my first five rules of shipping is the the case pocket is EMPTY!

On some of the cases the lid can open enough to create an opening before it hits the neck. Friction isn't enough to keep the lid closed. Maybe it's a bass thing?

Agreed - it absolutely happens and it's caused more heartache than you'd believe. I've had shippers leave original metal knobs unprotected in the pocket pop out and bang all around the case.

You are also assuming a case design. On a couple rectangular cases the guitar neck does not even go over the compartment so you can open the compartment without moving the guitar. Whether that is a feature or a bug is up to you. On the typical acoustic cases I can get my hands on they all have the compartment under the neck, so you are right, the neck is an impediment. But some of them the neck is high over the lid and as noted, there is room for things to get out without the guitar moving.
