I think the dogs are matched to the wrong notation.

:)

(I can read traditional notation and find tabs sometimes frustrating. They rarely tell me much about rhythm, which matters if I am learning something new, and they tell me where to play on the neck, and with bass, anyway, there are usually alternatives that might be easier to play or sound better).

Tabs were made for people who can’t read music and play by feel or by ear, so the rhythm arguably isn’t needed.

in my experience most tabs are wrong so my barking is usually about the fact that I have to rewrite them anyway.

I've always wondered if people didn't intentionally put errors in TAB to prevent from getting sued for transposing and publishing music without permission?

I've read that theory before, and it could be, but I can't imagine that copyright lawyers would look at tabs and think, "Nah - that's only 90% accurate so we'll let them slide." Then again lawyers are an odd bunch that way.

My experience with TABs is that about 10% of them are actually useful, but for a long time they were the best method of learning how to play certain songs accurately.

Many years ago I subscribed to Guitar for the Practicing Musician, which contained excellent tablatures, with accompanying discussions/explanations.

Nowadays, YouTube and guitar lesson sites provide the best way to learn songs that you can’t figure out by ear.

On a related note, the soft drink TAB was just retired.

I recall the days of paper maps when a deliberate mistake was printed to catch someone who copied the map rather than researched their own :)

I don't think the errors in tab have much to do with copyright as much as bad ears and people tabbing how they play something and not what was recorded.

I have a vague recollection when tab sites were under siege because they were deemed to be violating copyrights but most sites now have disclaimers about educational use so its not true now, if it ever was a violation.

I don't get all that $hit - I play completely by ear, always have.

How does a guitarist protect his guitar from being stolen?

He stores it in a bass case.

Ok, back on track!

I sure can play by ear, but why not speed the process.

I am one of those people that have no right attempting to play a musical instrument! I really have no ear at all! I can barely even tell if a guitar is in tune. So having to constantly learn new band lines for my old cover band, TABs were a great place to start. I would combine them with people's YouTube videos. Learning guitar by ear is one thing. Learning Bass lines is much more difficult!

As for playing by ear, I can do that. I can also read music, and I can also read tabs. They are all useful skills.
