Thinking About Selling my F50R

I have a buddy who has been asking me for weeks to sell him my F50R. I recently purchased a Gibson SJ200 (maple b/s) and I’m having trouble seeing the need to keep two jumbo guitars. They obviously sound different but I find myself drawn to the SJ200 tone more than the F50R. I think it’s because I have so many rosewood guitars already but only this one maple.

Does anyone have any thoughts about these two guitars? Will I regret selling this stellar F50R or is one good jumbo enough?

You are asking a tough question on a Guild forum! I wouldn't make that decision for at least two weeks. That MIGHT give you enough time to lean one way or the other?
Both are outstanding guitars!

I'm gonna chime in here thinking that Stuball has the right idea. I think time is your friend right now. If, as you said, the SJ200 is being favored remember that it's NEW!! A new guitar with new sounds and that is always exciting. I'd concur with waiting for a while and see what you think in 2 to 4 weeks. Every week or so, pick up the F50R and play it for a bit, and remember why you love it as a musical instrument, and then put it back and let another week or so go by. Two very different guitars made of different woods that share a jumbo shape but that's about it. F50R's in good shape that are well cared for are generally fairly easy to sell, so that can always happen. Maybe just let some of the "new" wear off the SJ200 and then reevaluate? That would be my advice, too! Congrats on the Gibson!! Those are very nice guitars...... (y)

I knew posting that question here would be tough! I’ve been mulling it over for about three weeks and he’s had the guitar on loan for about a week now. Two completely different guitars, both with amazing tones. I installed EJ17s on both guitars last weekend (at the advice of some forum members here for my Guild) and the F50R came alive. It didn’t like light gauge or bluegrass gauge nearly as much as the mediums.

I do know for certain I will keep the Gibson. It has been one of my dream guitars for years and I was fortunate to swing a great deal on an absolutely stellar example tone and playability wise. It’s finish is nowhere near as exemplary as the Guild but the tone.... The F50 has also been one of my dream guitars for a while now as well so I’ve painted myself into a corner of sorts.

I just watched this video of Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons performing one of his old solo songs. Just him, a mic, ridiculous monk robe and his Guild. Minimilast playing but the tone of his F55 complimenting his voice always reminds me why I chose to trade my Martin HD-28 for the F50R. These guitars have so much useable dynamic range for how I enjoy playing.

Great advice as well. I would be selling to my buddy for a friend’s price and leaving a bunch of money on the table to avoid shipping costs, Reverb fees, etc. He would be getting a steal of a deal on a mint 2006 F50R. There is simply not a scratch on the guitar and the burst is the best I have ever seen. I would blush if I told you the price I offered him.

I will answer that like my bass fishing buddy answers ( use to) me when we are fishing out of my boat. I will ask him, "where you want to fish" and he will always say, "yo boat yo gas-fish where you want to."
Your guitar - sell it for a dollar if you want.

You need to keep both. The F 50R is a great guitar (I have two) and you can never have too many Jumbos regardless of tonewood. So it is said, so it shall be.

If there is no rush to offload one of them, just keep them for a while until you settle in with one or the other... or both! :)

I think your friend is using Jedi mind tricks on you.

Unless you NEED to sell this right now then wait. Re-read the words that you wrote here... dream guitar.., amazing tone... came alive... traded your Martin... mint... best burst... It’s obvious you don’t want to sell this guitar.

You managed to find an outstanding F50. From what you’ve said it seems like you will be kicking yourself for selling it. Patience.

Great advice as usual. It's not a money thing I was thinking more of keeping my guitar count down to a respectable number, especially the Jumbos. I have decided to keep my Guild as it's just too good to be used as a leveling tool. My other guitars now refuse to make eye contact with me as I look around.

Thanks everyone and Happy 4th to you all!

I hear you there. SJ200 - yeah: dream guitar. Price always out of my reach though. Then I got my F50R. I no longer dream of an SJ200. Sounds like you got a good one though, so enjoy it! Probably ought to keep the F50R, too, just to keep the SJ honest. :p

I should have checked the recent postings. Good decision! Well done and congrats on your SJ and your F50R!

I didn't sell my Martin M 36 to a friend for twenty years. All that time, he'd ask me, especially after I started acquiring a few other guitars. One day I realized it just didn't have the headroom I wanted, was only getting played out of guilt now and again, and I was keeping it only because I had had it for so long. He was shocked. Anyway, it was time to move on.

My buddy just called me to tell me he was running late to my house for a 4th of July cookout / backyard picking session. He opened the conversation by saying "I think I might be having 2nd thoughts about buying your Guild. I was just offered a 2019 Martin D-35 for the same price..." Problem solved and everybody's happy now! I keep the better guitar and my Martin buddy doesn't know the difference..... unless he's secretly lurking around in here...

Cheers

Simple solution! Replace the SJ200 with an F50 Standard from New Hartford, and then keep both of them! Hey, what did you expect from a Guild board? I think my New Hartford F50ce Standard is a better guitar than any SJ200 I've ever played, with the possible exception of Reverend Gary Davis’s '51.
