So do these stay in tune well and the fretted notes play solidly in tune, what with the longer string length behind the bridge before they reach the tailpiece?
The tailpiece position doesn't present any difference in tuning stability IME, it can make for more overtones coming from that area - which can be good or bad depending on your opinion. I play my S-100 with a lot of gain, on occasion, so I cut out the ringing behind the bridge with three rubber O-rings between the strings - I have always done this with my mandolins for the same reason.
