Had a local college station tuned in while driving today, and this one caught me with my guard down. After a couple of sorely needed belly laughs, which have been in pretty short supply lately, the tears came and still keep tryin' to leak out every once in a while. A lot of you will know what I'm sayin', I'm sure.
As Biker Doc says, PEACE>

That was something. Thanks.
We were "a bit off center" back then to be sure but everyone else was just plain wrong. Wait!!!! Things haven't changed. They still don't get it. Unfortunately millions of folks sayin' the same thing are only whisperers.

Peace

At least I can try to hold on to the belly laughs, but you know they say a little emotional catharsis is good for you once in a while. Wait, I'm tellin you that? Play on brother.

What a coincidence -- I'm not making this up: Today at work I told a colleague who is a tad younger than I that I needed some spreadsheets "with circles and arrows on the front and a paragraph on the back" explaining the data. She didn't get it. Illiterate noob, what does she listen too, anyway?

I pretty much wore the grooves off that record way back when. Some of the songs on the flip side were pretty good, too.

I don't want a pickle,
Just want to ride on my motorsickle.
I don't want to die,
Just want to ride on my mo tor cy hmm hmm cle. :D :D

Yep, this is the only place I knew where people would understand, and appreciate the reminder!

I pulled a tendon in my wrist at work yesterday. It hurts to play guitar.

At least I can come here for a laugh or two and a shot of nostalgia.

Cool new avatar, Bikerdoc. 8) 8)

That's just wonderful, to be reminded like that - and to read it somehow brings Guthrie's voice and manner right back to immediate presence - a masterpiece of true subversion.

Thanks, and more.

Thanks! Yeah, our local radio station plays that song several times every Thanksgiving Day!

When I was 16 yrs. old, my youth group at church opened a coffeehouse (1970) We worked on the place for months, lined up entertainment for opening night, then they bailed at the last minute  Then someone remembered; "Hey, Marc and Scott play guitar! (We'd taken up guitar only a few weeks ago) and our friend Ken had memorized the entire monologue to Alice's Restaurant, so we became the opening night entertainment, played the song about 300 times while Ken recited the words    Ken carried us, because we really sucked...

Six years later, Scott and I both went out and bought brand new Guilds: me, a D-25M and he, a tobacco sunburst D-35. We both still have 'em too!

I used to cover this song back in my 60's college days. GREAT song!

These days I use the chorus part and insert the venue name wherever I'm playing as the lead in to taking a break. Seems to go over well with the owners!

I have five grandkids now and they all love to sing along with the chorus. They also LOVE Arlo's Motorcycle Song. The music will live on!

Arlo did an anniversary tour a few years ago and I had the opportunity to hear him resurrect Alice's restaurant. Even knowing where the tale was headed, it was just a joy to watch him and hear him unfold the yarn of his brush with the law and its impact on his selective service status. (Never understood why they called it "selective service;" never seemed all that selective to me.) I've seen Arlo several times in concert but on previous occasions, he adamantly refused (with characteristic graciousness and humor) to do Alice's Restaurant. So, this was actually the first time I'd heard him do it live. He also did City of New Orleans and Mr. Customs Man, as I recall -- kind of a "greatest hits" concert.

Here's the very cool poster from the tour:

"written on a Martin modelD-18 after being rejected for the US military due to a littering conviction" 1966
 looks like "GLOP" is everywhere!! I just recieved my Acoustic Guitar magizine for May.......on the back cover.......a verse from Alices Resturaunt ! Y'know, that old Martin ad where they associate artists and songs to their guitars. "Music history.Martin history" THAT ONE!
