Mgod was gracious enough to allow me to visit him and view some of his guitars. That was fun, but the stories that went with many of them were even more fun.

He is not the nasty guy some of you believe him to be. (Sorry for spilling the beans, Dan.)

Glad I got to hang with him for a bit.

Huh - good thing I'm only semi-vain - my oncologist was right, the prednisone has made me look fat. I came out of the hospital in early December at 125 lbs. Now up to a massive 135. So only 20 pounds underweight.

Anyway, there's the lime green wall and the black couch from the Guild Orgy picture that Fred and I took the day we met.

One take from the Guild Orgy Photo Session

1532.jpg

My recollection is that Dan had just met Fred Hammon, of Dark Star pickup fame, and this is instruments from both of their collections. I think Fred is in the back corner, holding the Hagstrom in place. The "Phil Lesh" M-85 is the blond in the back row. It has been discussed before, for example here, but Rick Suchow's website is being reconstructed so the story is not immediately available.

"Carry It All" was also discussed at the summit. It can be played at https://anniestela.bandcamp.com/track/carry-it-all My recollection is that when people ask Dan about Starfire tone this is the example he likes to share. Note that Dan was playing a basically stock Starfire II which is a different beast from the Starfires of Casady and Lesh with the "proto-Alembic" modifications.

I'm going from memory so there may be corrections but...

Thank you, gentlemens.

It's been an interesting odyssey. It WILL kill me, probably sooner than later. So far I'm good with anything that happens.
