There's a foot of snow in my driveway this morning and another two feet of "bonus snow" courtesy of the village snowplow. Took a PTO day from work, surfin' YouTube and enjoying some coffee before I fire up the snowblower, came across some nice clips of Sam Lay.
Sam, Hubert Sumlin, and Pinetop Perkins are among a small handful of musicians still alive who were at the core of the Chicago blues scene of the '50s and '60s. Sam is a drummer and vocalist who played on a ton of Chess sessions, and gigged with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Paul Butterfield to name a few. He has toured with his own bands and plays some guitar as well. Sam used to play in this area a lot in the seventies, his band didn't have a real regular lineup, usually whoever he could grab that needed some work, and an occasional surprise, like a very memorable evening when Koko Taylor showed up.
