Every time I wake up in the morning, I have a song running through my head, random as all get-out. This morning it was "Kiss An Angel Good Morning," where the heck did that come from? The other day it was a Carpenters song. Could be classic rock, country, pop, apparently anything I ever listened to on the radio.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Yes, but for me it's nearly a constant 24 hours. Yes, even in my sleep there's some sort of "soundtrack" playing. Is it normal? Who knows, but I'm used to it. :)

Yes. I get earworms and often wake up with one. I am recording vocals that are mixed into hymns for two different church choirs. Often the earworm is either something I recorded the day before but needed a lot of rehearsal or needed several takes. Occasionally both churches want the same hymn in which case it is rattling through my head for the next few days.

Through the years I found out that the concept of "normality" is in most cases not very helpful and even has some pitfalls to it, so.... If it does not concern you or your surroundings negatively, you're fine ;)

I know this phenomenon myself, some days it's more in the background, on other days it's more present, at any time of day and night.

A snarky teenager once told me "Normal is just a setting on the dryer". They were right enough that I remembered it. As a mathematician I am also used to "normal" being a synonym for "perpendicular" and I dabbled in enough statistics to understand a "normal" distribution. But I tend not to use "normal" for behavior.

I have earworms all of the day and all of the night. Great, now the Kinks are in there...

It's something you just heard more commonly, but most of us could play whole albums in our heads. Hendrix, Cream, Beatles, Stones, etc...

For me it's Queen since me and wife heard this on youtube one day recently.

The only cure for an earworm is another earworm. :D Not only did I get 'em but sometimes after jamming, I couldn't sleep because I'm still playing in my head.

These days I don't get 'em as often and they're easier to turn off.

What I really hate is hearing a tune I like but never getting the name, or hearing/remembering something I want to try but not being able to write it down right away to revisit later, like when driving.

What's going on in my head pretty much all the time. A vast array of mostly obscure music and lyrics.

There is a fascinating, in-depth book on music and the brain by the late Dr. Oliver Sacks:

Yep, music's hard-wired in our systems.

BTW, just for you Dread, here's an "antidote" earworm", suspect this'd be on your all-time faves list too. In fact I'm gonna pull out the chart later, haven't been inspired to that in a few weeks!:

Al, thanks for reminding me of this song! I only recently heard it on a decent stereo vs my AM car radio in the '70's. What a great song - love the descending bass line in the verse - reminds me of the opening to "My Generation". It is now on the list of songs I play - really fun and the bass line makes it very cool!

I almost always have a song stuck in my head, including snippets from all the songs on an entire CD I have recently listened to. A friend told me I should listen to instrumentals but they get stuck, too. Like the percussion beginning to Cecelia. Or 2 Cellos doing Thunderstruck. All in all, I don't think having music in my head is a bad thing at all.

The dream police
They live inside of my head
The dream police
They come to me in my bed

I just helped you get past your last earworm ;]]
