Spent the morning in the scullery (Navy lingo for washing pots & pans.) They built up for a couple days as we did other stuff around here. But I'm the chef around here, and I hate a dirty kitchen!

Anyway, while washing dirty dishes, I realized they are a blessing because they are evidence that we have plenty of good food to eat.

I'm the chef at home and hate a dirty kitchen, too. I love to cook, but the cooking and clean up (one full dishwasher load per day!) for a family of four is wearing me out. Normally, I could break up the week with a couple of "eat out" meals, but not now. I'm not complaining... just tired.

It's not just the navy! A scullery is a room in a house used for washing up dishes and laundering clothes, or as an overflow kitchen. Hence the job title, Scullery Maid.

Sorry for the interjection. I just love words. :)

I love words too, GAD, that's why I used this one! It can mean different things, but in the Navy the specific definition of scullery is where pots & pans are washed.

"In United States military facilities and most commercial restaurants, a "scullery" refers to the section of a dining facility where pots and pans are scrubbed and rinsed (in an assembly line style). It is usually near the kitchen and the serving line."

Awesome.. New word to add to the vocab! Does this word have anything to do with scull-duggery ? (I have no idea if I spelled that right, and I refuse to look it up because that's cheating) :D

My evidence is the 5 pounds I’ve gained in the past 2 months, even though I’m walking 2 miles a day when the weather cooperates.

I doubt that they're related. Could be wrong, tho. When I did catering a lot, gigantic big parties with tents and tables and chairs and rental dishes and silverware and glassware and serving pieces, we always set up a scullery station between the kitchen and the party area. Accessible to both. All rented dining ware had to be retuned cleaned (although I'm sure they went through sterilization once they got back to the company) so we set up big galvanized tubs with Sterno pots under to heat water with soap and rinse and dry stations, then repacked everything for the rental company to pick up after.

Well, I looked it up (and cheated). The word is "skulduggery" and doesn't seem to share an etymology with scullery.

I looked up etymology and it doesn’t seem to share a similarity with entomology, unless you find insects in your scullery.

Just got out of the Scullery. I can't handle excessive amounts of clusterf*ck, "flat surface disorder" she calls it... My favorite is washing some old dirty Mason jars you found and having them come sparkling clean, I love old glass. On that, I actually get compliments. But, I've got a couple hundred old jars and bottles.

Since there's only me in my house I don't have much food-related stuff to wash per day. But I wash it every morning while the coffee is brewing. I also order pizza via app every Tuesday…covers Tuesday & Wednesday dinner. It gets dropped off on my porch from a place ~1 mile from the house. Tomorrow I'll be getting the first takeout from my fav Lebanese diner since early March. Glad they've managed to hang on!

Thank God for dirty dishes

Reminded me of the big Northridge earthquake. Many of my dishes were dirty and in the sink, which saved them from ending up on the ground after gertting thrown out of the cupboard. Thank God for dirty dishes!
