Comments wrt LTG?

This is lousy service from an ISP but a necessary risk if the servers are in someone's garage.

Yes, talkbass is a daily staple of mine (just like LTG, though of course, if forced to choose, LTG would be my favorite).
It's been a bit of a cold-turkey separation for me. Seemingly bottomless well of interesting tech stuff to learn there, spanning all brands and eras. Drawback is the number of "troll" posts, wrong information, and there can be quite a lot of rude jerks too... I suppose it comes with the territory of such a large membership. It's certainly a much less personal environment. Having regular periods of downtime at the office though, I do miss it. Hopefully none of the information/data is lost and they'll be back on their feet again soon!

Too bad: I check in there pretty regularly, though this place is more tailored to my specific bass preferences...(*nod, wink*)

I never stepped foot in an online forum before 2007 (when I first learned about DarkStar pickups) but I do recall very hazily a handful of visits to the Pit. Unfortunately I mostly missed that party.

I think, in a way it prepared me for LTG.

It was notorious for moving platforms but it ended up on Tapatalk (which I have never seen elsewhere either)

A couple of years ago I remembered or guessed credentials and logged in. Very quiet, nothing posted in the last few years and I was reminded of how my interests and tolerance for online behavior that I would avoid in real life have changed.

Just seeing this. The fire was not in the same ISP as where LTG is hosted.

I was too terse. I was wondering if the LTG ISP had offsite backups and a continuity of operations guarantee and whether you had mirror in your garage that could be online 15 minutes after you found out you needed it :)

Ah..

The LTG database is backed up in full every night. Backups are saved daily for a week, then weekly for two months.

Those LTG backups are rsynced to my home machine(s) regularly.

The server itself has a similar scheme.

As for a continuity guarantee, my polite answer is "no". :) That being the case, though, a catastrophic failure would actually be the simplest to recover from since I wouldn't really need to figure anything out. While I certainly could spin up a mirror in my garage, it would be far better to spin one up in the cloud. I can have a new server online in minutes, then it would just be a matter of restoring a backup to it.

I've thought about having a live mirror at home but the main benefit of such a thing in my mind would be for testing and then it wouldn't really be a viable hot cutover solution. Having a live mirror that could be used as a hot cutover would be good for a catastrophic failure, but wouldn't be good for a hacking situation since the mirror would mirror the hack within a day.

The biggest risk is probably if something happens and I'm not available, but since traveling is now nonexistent (and likely not returning for me) that risk is minimized.
