I'm considering this beautiful Bluesbird on TGP.

He's sending me the serial# so I can verify the year with Hans.

Anything I should know about these? I'm constantly confused with the whole bluesbird/blues90 thing...

OK to update my own post, from what I've read it seems that the Blues-90 was a similar guitar but with lower appointments such as dots and an unbound neck.

A Bluesbird with factory P90s would be more desirable then I'd think...

It's a Corona-built Bluesbird P-90. Guild stopped making the Blues 90 when Westerly closed. This model retains the block inlays and bound fingerboard of the Bluesbird model and subs in the P-90 pups.

That's a gorgeous quilt top. And the Duncan P-90's can really snarl and growl.

Some people think that the seymour duncan p90s are a little too aggressive. Can't speak for a bluesbird p90, but the blues 90 neck is pretty wide.

Yup, definitely a chunky neck. I have no issues with the stock pups. For those who don't like the aggressive P90's, check with fellow LTG-er Andy Hiwatt. He tamed his with a change-out and has reported good results / more versatility.

Dan,

Chunky neck, do you mean like an acoustic neck like feel?

Thanks,
Treem

Hi Treem,
I wouldn't call it an acoustic feel, its not that wide. Its more like the 50's Gibson necks that you either love or hate. Fatter and "Chunky" is as best as I can describe it. Very similar to a Les Paul Studio I have with a '59 neck. Also similar to a re-issue SG I had. Not for shredders.

I read somewhere that the Blues 90 was a Bluesbird body with a Songbird neck but I am not sure if that is totally accurate, would have to check with Hans.

Hope this helps!

Dan

I was talking about the Blues 90 having the chunky neck. I hope I didn't mis-lead anyone.

According to a post by Matsikma on another thread today, I was apparently wrong about the Corona Bluesbird 90 having the normal Bluesbird neck. My bad.

Treem, until I got my Nightbird (I had coveted one for 20 years), I bought and sold about ten Bluesbirds on e-Bay. I was fascinated by them. Very beautiful guitars with a wonderful feel. I thought they were extremely consistent from guitar to guitar in terms of feel and sound (with the exception of the holoflake model from the Fender Custom Shop), but each top was unique in appearance. I had a Blues 90, as well. But I never scored a Bluesbird P90.

GAD,

I think you've already been directed here (see below), so forgive if this is a duplicate. There is a good discussion there about the differences between the Blues 90 (which came first, and is Westerley made), and the subsequent Bluesbird P90.

Besides the age, the differences are minimal, with the Blues 90 being a "simpler" model with dot fret markers, binding only on the body, and limited color choice (three I think). After Fender took over Guild, they renamed this model the Bluesbird and sexed it up with more colors and appointements, including block fret markers.

I owned both a blues 90 and Corona bluesbird - everything said here is correct. They are two very different guitars. If I recall, the Fender 2002 catalog states that the bluesbird is available with P-90s - so I assume everything else is presumably like the regular 'bird - neck, markers, binding, etc.

Love 'em both.
