Must be the picture, guys. I'm not seeing it. That's OK, I'm getting blind from staring at bad C code this morning anyway. ;)

Hmmm. Maybe they got the 12 stringers right? Anyone else with a Tacoma 6er have any pics? The ones I've seen this issue on are D55s and F50s (I think only the ones with a G shield are misplaced)

My Tacoma D-40 has the Chesterfield headstock, not the shield. Looks good to me, but I'm looking at a picture, not the guitar itself. My initial feeling is that, if it sounds good, that's the main thing. On the other hand, if I'd paid good money for it and it wasn't right, I'd probably be ticked, too. Curious to hear what FMIC has to say, if anything.

My '06 D-55 looks just like jazzmang's. No problems.

However...

The lower bout on the top continues to show some problems in the finish which almost look like blemish lines about 1/4" wide and 3" long and "wiggly". Obviously, something's not right in the finish. I live where we have perfect humidity for guitars and little temperature change (San Francisco Peninsula), so I know this is not a climate-related problem.

That said, the tone and playability of this instrument is just exceptional! I don't care if it has lot rot or not as long as it plays/sounds/sustains like it does now.

My '06 D-40BJ and '06 F-412 are spot on.

Excluding the photographer's reflection, it looks good to me . . .

'06 D-55, '06 D-40BJ and an '06 F-412 -- That's quite a haul of '06 Tacoma built Guilds, 6. I'm only a little envious.

I've never played a D-55, how does it compare to the D-40?

Really different animals. As you would expect, the rosewood body/back and engleman spruce top of the D-55 makes for a warmer sound than that which emits from the D-40BJ (adi top, mahogany sides/back).

Both guitars do very well plugged in as well (D-55 has a Fishman Matrix pup while my D-40BJ has a Highlander iP-2 pup). I plug into a Fender Acoustasonic Jr DSP amp when solo gigging. Makes for a great combination of TONE CITY!

Intriguing post, to say the least
On a similar note, a friend of mine bought a brand new Pontiac LeMans in the early 70s. He was absolutely wild about his sweet little ride. Drove it for a couple of years and it was love....until the day I noticed that the 'e' in "Lemans" on the passenger side was put on backwards.
The love affair ended that day, his attitude changed considerably, but the car was still a good ride. Even though I told him that he had a one-of-a-kind gem, he really bothered over that backward 'e' and eventually got rid of the car thinking something was wrong with it.

True story, and those are just the highlights,
Joe

Fender rep got back to me today.

1) He acknowledged that Fender changed the headstock layout in the move to Tacoma. "Guild logo and shield were moved up higher on the headstock layout"

2) He also acknowledged that this particular one suffered from an off-center install and they would remedy it.

Remedy: He wants me to send the guitar to Guild's Nashville shop for them to replace the headstock overlay with one that is properly centered. Estimate: about a month.

Should I even bother at this point?

A month is nothing if it will make you feel better about the guitar (and I think it would).

However, if they say one month, I'd figure closer to 6 months on the wait based upon others' experiences.

Jazzy... Wow, well, I'm glad Fender even knew what you were talking about and agreed with you. That's great.

I guess they'll have to replace the faceplate for you. There were some pretty rosewood faceplates that were made for some of the axes at NAMM this past year, now maybe you can ask them for one of those (I don't know if they were manufactured in Tacoma or elsewhere -- though I think the guitars themselves probably were)...

Good luck!

Oh, and if you were asking me this question ... no, I wouldn't do it.

Yea, the rep I've talked to is Scott M. (Consumer relations, extension 7231). He seems to be on top of it... said he talked to some Guild techs from the factory in reference to the official headstock design they're using now.

I also asked Scott if they would be willing to actually hook me up with a special overlay (Westerly style layout, possibly in Cocobolo). Haha I'm pushing my luck, but we'll see what happens!

Very good!!! Yes, it was a cocobolo faceplate, not rosewood as I said earlier, that was used for NAMM. Those are really sweet, Jazz. If you can get one, you should. That'd be really nice and worth doing (IMO).

I tried to get some info about the New Hartford Guilds out of him.
Supposedly, no F50Rs have been released yet, so he won't be able to send me one.

Anyways, I'm still figuring out what to do here...

Hey Jazzy, in my humble opinion: Absolutely, let them make it right. It's not like you don't have any decent guitars to play while you're waiting for it :D

And, then you can truthfully say "it came from the Custom Shop!"
