I tend to believe the love of America Made Guid's has no Xenophobic bias. We Guild enthusiast were proud of the long tradition of Guilds American Made because of the large number of the other famous names in guitars moving some of their products to off shore manufacturing locations.

However when Fender acquired the Guild products and added the DeArmond line I was just beginning to return to my guitar playing roots. The DeArmond line had many Guild features at a price point I could afford. I still have my 1st DeArmond...a red Starfire Special (equivalent to a semihollow SF3). I did swap in a set of vintage Franz pup's at a time when only vintage Franz were available.
So with the good quality of Korean and Indonesian made electrics I'm ok with that and if the price point is competative more players will discover Guild guitars.

That's a cool mod on that guitar. I still remember the picture of it. (y)

The way the fingerboard just abruptly ends at the nut instead of continuing into the "carve" of the headstock is troubling. There is no nut slot, it just sits there (probably glued into place). Cost saving related no doubt. Also that first fret looks really grungy. Is Cordoba not setting these up?

Hello

My fantastic Guild Nightbird X-2000 has no special slot for the nut either - it is there at the end of fingerboard - why should there be an extra channel routed on that already thin spot of the neck? Same thing w F-512 - F 212CE - both Song birds & F-50-R

The difference is, that there is headstock veneer, that ends at back of the nut - so that is the "back wall" of what would be a cavity.

Glue is strong - and the nut is going to stay put - therefore I see no problem in that construction.

This particular guitar is definitively not my cup of tea - but I see no reason for objecting it or otherwise putting it down.

Nuuska, I think that headstock veneer "pocket" is what GG is talking about, and the Surfliner just looks kind of cheesy without one. For me, the only real question here is whether there's some reason to believe or fear that a low-end guitar isn't built to last. I remember the really crappy "entry-level" (more like "throw-away" level) guitars I used to see from First Act and that just stains the brand.

At least I think that's all anyone's saying.

Poor workmanship or design for obsolescence will hurt the brand.

My first thought was - Hmm, I guess they're making a Fender-style model now. I wonder what the scale length is? Answer: 25.5" 😆

So the danger of noon wine--I pulled the trigger on an orange one--like after that S-300 I really need another solid body guitar! However, the SURFLINER
runs just across the street from my shop, so I felt like I had to. The other reason is that I had wanted a guitar with microtonal frets and was thinking about getting a Strat copy this guy had that also sells just the re-fretted necks for Fenders, and I thought even with some of the slight negatives this model may have, it still sounded better and was cheaper than the one that guy was selling. I like the overall look of the Surfliner and certainly would have no qualms about customizing it. I've worked on a lot of poplar over the years, it being the main secondary wood on mid to late Victorian furniture, and was often stained a walnut color for less expensive Victorian walnut furniture and in the 1920s the "walnut" pieces were usually stained poplar or gumwood with walnut veneer on tops of tables, vanities, sideboards, etc. Poplar often has green streaks running through it, so maybe eventually a greenburst?

I think this is a really good electric with a cool vibe and at a REALLY great price point. I know people wanna bash but I'm not exactly sure why? If you don't like then mod away and if not then eff off..... I think Guild can keep themselves afloat with this one. Others have done it.... why not Guild? I just don't get it why people are so upset.

Maybe-maybe!- guitarists are a very conservative bunch.Well , I am!+ I love to be upset by trifles such as "That toggle switch-tip is pure heresy!"or topics like "What exactly do you have in mind when you say "F-holes"?( Ouch!!I hope the Mighty Moderator-which I revere - doesn't go beserk on this one! This is a test: Allo, allo,Moderator? Do you read me?)

1964, Jetstar, budget solid-body: "Awkward!!Ugly-duckling!!Gumby!! Fugly!!A witch! burn! burn!"
1978 s-300:" Whazzat?An halberd??Nor Strat nor Less Pull? Awwww! Never! Forget it!!"
-Objection: you can't possibly compare....I know...In fact, I can! (it's wrong , maybe, like Jaguar Mark II vs Citroën 2 CV, pros and cons..).

How to use a 2-way switch:
0= I don't like it, won't buy it!
1= Ok, fun , deal!
Hopefully these sell good, so the brand makes an awful lot of money, thus reissuing the s-300,the Masteramp 66-J, and generously selling off Artist Awards, Nightbirds and Capris! Hooray!!

Hey, welcome aboard, Ted!

Hope you enjoy your cool blue Surfliner!! I think you're just hearing some concern about possibilities, not that folks are down about it. Anyway, welcome aboard, and why don't you post a picture of your cool new axe!

Ted,
Welcome!

Try not to be put off. We all love Guilds and realize that the more diverse the offerings, at all price points, the more the Guild name will get spread. Many of us are lovers of past models, so bear with us as we come to grips with the new offerings. Yes, we may grumble every now and then, but it’s an affectionate grumble. BECAUSE we love Guilds, we want them to be as good as they can be.
