Sweet!

For years there was a Superbird sitting in a "local" music store here in NJ that I would see every time I stopped in there. The store owner wanted too much for it but I would check every visit. I wonder if it's still there? Anybody been to Hi-Way Music lately?

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!

Holy crap, I can't believe that shop is still there! I used to pop in from time to time while I was in grad school at Rutgers (over 30 years ago!). I only bought one guitar there, but honestly, I can't remember what it was.

I assume that Superbird was the one for sale for $200 out of NY or NJ a few months back? I almost went for it but decided to eventually fix the one in my basement (when I retire).
In my experience the loudest most powerful amp Guild made was the last version of the Thunderbass Quantum model with a pair of 6550 power tubes. I once had a friend with a 200W Marshall head and although the 6550 Quantum and 6550 Marshall sound very different I swear the 6550 Quantum was as loud or louder!

Talking about monsters - today is THE DAY I got rid of two Tom Danley Servodrive bass bins - plus two small JBL bass cabinets w 18-inch E-155 in them plus JBL top cabs. Them Servodrives are about 4x4x2 feet + casters and about 200-250pounds each.

Actually I could answer GADs "That thing is a monster" with Crocodile Dundee phrase - "Naah - that is no monster - THIS is a monster"

Please meet 3x24 Fane Colossus subwoofer - in front is a Mesa-Boogie 2x15 cabinet for scale.

Actually very low frequency loudspeakers - besides from music purposes - have been used for at least two over-sea-level-purposes besides communication with whales. The two I'm aware of are both with Tom Danley @ https://www.danleysoundlabs.com/

Smaller one is called contrabass - developed to be a single person movable low frequency cabinet capable of producing low & loud enough tones for studying communicaton of elephants.

Bigger one is THIS PUPPY - for military purposes. I have a book that concentrates on infrasound - stuff that you do not hear but feel. There's some nasty information there. Humans can do all kinds of things.

Thes two 3x24 cabinets were a miserable failure when they built local conference house in 1990 - speakers and box size are ok. Vents are tiny - they should be at least 12 inch diameter with tubes. They sound ok on low levels, but start to choke as the volume goes up. With bigger ports they'd be ok. Anyway - major problem wae, that they were installed in ceiling - a great position per se - and all surrounding ceiling panels etc started to rattle - so they were unusable. They were there about 20 years before finally taken down. They had to build a scaffold to reach the high ceiling. I waited about 4 years after striking the deal with them, because the scaffold had to be built between the seats - and it was done when they had other more important stuff going on . . .

They were about 200kg per box - about 3-4- feet deep. Another pic with a friend of mine as a dipstick.

And the room from where they came from

😲 Those Matterhorn speakers are monsters!

"The Matterhorn project deals with much higher sound levels than most ever encounter. For example, at the mouth of the horn which is an 8’ by 8’ opening, at its highest output the sound level is around 152dB which applies about 18 pounds per square foot of pressure on the structure."

Weird! Why would they call it "The Matterhorn"? I'm Swiss, I must know 🧐 😅

This brings to mind an interesting story my uncle once told me (he's a pastor): He knows of pastors who tell their organ players to play a long infrasound note during certain parts of the sermon, so they could increase the churchgoers' feel of trepidation when talking of sins, damnation and hell etc. So military is not the only one to use this....

Toblerone? Maybe they devoured Toblerone while designing it - - -

But - I have an interesting book somewhere here. It is a scientific study about infra-frequency noise.

In one chapter :

Military - during & after WW I the doctors paid attention that on battlefields lay numerous dead bodies that had no visible injuries - in autopsies it was discovered, that the innards of those men were "mushed" - more or less - causing internal bleeding - leading to death. They came to conclusion, that it must be because of sonic pressure of explosions. After that all kinds of tests have been performed by many. Results include certain dB-levels where things start to happen.

I can not find the book right now, so I improvise the dB-numbers - and we are talking 0-5Hz range

160dB - dogs quit breathing - they lay on floor resonating - permanent hearing loss on some people
180dB - permanent hearing loss on most people
200dB - permanent hearing loss on all people - some have internal injuries
220dB - most people have internal injuries - some die
240dB - everybody dies

Naturally one starts wondering how can such pressure levels be done - the source list at the end of the book is pages long - it includes about anything one can or can not imagine from voluntarily hearing tests to atomic bomb studies. And that then makes you wonder if all the tested persons were volunteers. Them dogs definitely did not wish to be any part of it.

Am I veering slightly? Oops . . .
