Cool story and cool guitar! I like the early features (no phase switch, Hagstrom bridge and tailpiece) and it looks like a maple body.

That makes it even more interesting!
Could be also some different body wood, not sure what was used at that time for solid bodies. And those "quilted" effects could be just in the lacquer from the heat, impossible to tell from the pictures for me.
