OK, I've seen this one listed, have no idea what it is. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

Hello mad dog,

In typical Guild fashion this is a typical mix-up of model designations.
During this period, a Studio 303 with humbuckers would be called a Studio 303 Special
The block inlay fingerboard and the Grover RotoMatic tuners are upgrades, which would make it a Studio 303 Deluxe.
The Roman III is a regular Starfire designation.

Don't have the slightest idea why they decided to call it a Studio III ST Deluxe, but there it is!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Funny that they think there's binding missing on the headstock. I guess they are not aware of the famous
"Guild Headplate Shrink".

So this model is full hollow, essentially a double cutaway SF III? That could be interesting. Never heard the name, or even saw a pic of it before. Has anyone owned or tried one?

Thanks Hans.

I took a 30 minute ride over to Tinicum Guitar Barn this afternoon to check out the custom studio guitar. The physical appearance of the guitar was decent-a nice looking guitar with the block marker neck. The Burst does not have noticable red so it is more like a antique burst (Non as red as Grots).

One of the issues of these guitars is that when you install a bigsby the neck angle doesn't put much of a arch over the bridge. That was the case here. I had owned one of these before similar to the one Grot showed and knew of this problem. On this Studio the strings are pretty high and there is no way your can lower them for close action with the Bigsby and Bigsby bridge. This probably can be a pretty decent guitar if you removed the Bigsby vibrato and bridge and added a harp and wooden bridge. Think Custom SF2 type of guitar. You could easily sell the Bigsby parts for $200 and have a sexy and rare guitar. The bottom line is if your plans are for use in the open position your good. If your planning to run up the neck you'll have a problem with the bigsby gear.

The guitar is being sold for a long time friend. Price seemed firm at $1500. I didn't see the case but was told it was well fitting but not a Guild.

The red car & red guitar certainly make a nice couple . . . 8)

What is that car, a Cobra replica?

The late, great Earl Hooker played one of these in the early 1960's. And boy, could he play.

Hello MacAoidh,

The Guild Studio Models were introduced in 1968, so it is very unlikely that Earl Hooker played one of these. However, I believe I've seen photos of Earl Hooker playing what looked like a copy of a Gibson Barney Kessel; same double florentine cutaway style, but with a deeper body.
That's probably what you've seen!

Sincerely,

I am interested in this guitar, but don't want to step on anyone's toes. Is anyone else interested?

I personally went over to check it out. However I am not interested in it.

Also check out www.guitarcenter.com and search under USED equipment for Guild. The last time I was on that site they offered a similar studio guitar but in Red.

I saw the one at Guitar Center and it's actually an ST 303 in cherry. Needs a lot of work. I would have bought it if it was $800.00.
If you are interested in an ST 302 in sunburst with the single coil pups and a Guildsby mine is on consignment at Action Music www.actionguitar.com. Same config as Grots, just not nearly as clean. I think Matt was going to list it under $1000.00. Give him a call if interested. He has not yet posted a pic. I just left it there last saturday.

Hello Hans

I dug through the bumpf and you are right, it's not a Guild, but the photos are too blurred to distinguish the make. I found this on Youtube, but I still can't quite make out the name on the headstock.'St.....'

Hello again MacAoidh,

The brand is Shaftesbury. It was a private brand owned by Rose Morris from England, which was used on various imported instruments. In this case it was a copy of a Barney Kessel imported from Japan.

Here's a photo that shows the logo,

and a photo of the man with the guitar:

Outstanding, Hans! Earl Hooker was the coolest, most soulful guy maybe ever. Great to see that pic.
