These are on a '70s S-100. Are they made by Gotoh or maybe Ping (was Ping even making tuners in the '70s?)? Probably not original so I guess it doesn't matter, but I've never seen these before.

Almost all closed tuners from all manufacturers are mounted like this.And one tiny wood screw holding them onto headstock?
How did I miss that? Wasn't paying close enough attention is why. My 1983 G45 was close by and sure enough it's closed back tuners have one screw holding them and they are my smoothest operating tuners. DAHAlmost all closed tuners from all manufacturers are mounted like this.

Because they are mounted in larger holes and ferules from the upper side fix them. So the litte screw only prevents rotation of them, there is no force on them. Open tuners mostly just sit in smaller diameter bushings, hence they are mostly mounted with two little screws.Wasn't paying close enough attention is why.
