Before the end of the year last year during quarantine I decided to buy stuff to make a champ/Herzog style circuit. Seeing the simplicity of the champ and the mods that can be done I decided this would be a great first build. I found a variant where someone utilized a 6AQ5 tube with NOS examples being very inexpensive, even RCA’s (I don’t believe new production exists at the time of this post.). Will have to do a “headphone” test with the output transformer with the power tranny powered up so I can see what’s the best orientation for the two transformers to prevent hum. I determined my original enclosure I planned on using would be too small and for a first amp build my main concern should be making the stupid thing work in the first place with as little noise as possible. With a compact chassis I’ll probably paint myself into a corner, if this was an effects box I’d be better able to achieve this. So I ordered a Hammond 1444-16 chassis that seems to be a good middle ground for compact but still easy for me to layout the components for a 6AQ5 loaded champ style circuit with a line out to be run as a Garnet Herzog but smaller. I also plan on making this into a small wood cab with an old 6x9 organ speaker I’m wanting to use for something but haven’t found that something until deciding to make this amp on a whim.

this Is a mock up until I can get some electrical tape to power the primary of the transformer and isolate the secondaries so they don’t short out on my metal bench and whatever pieces of metal I have on it. Other than the line out to use this as a Herzog the only mods I plan on implementing is to add a tonestack used on the Gibson GA-30 and some Garnets thats apparently pretty versatile for a one knob tone circuit and a switch to disable it.

The 6AQ5 has always been a sleeper tube for guitar amps. Basically a miniature 6V6. I built a 22W amp with a quad of 6AQ5s and cathode bias. It's a great sounding amp.
And surprisingly the NOS ones are cheap and very plentiful seeing this tube was commonly used for small radios of many varieties and TV sets though they were in a few guitar/organ amps as well. Being my first build I’m going to keep the mods to a minimum as the more stuff you tack on the more things can go wrong upon the initial power up test. As of the moment I scrapped the idea of making it a mini Herzog maybe doing that at at a later date, opting to use a 6x4 rectifier and maybe some tonestack mods.

My Univox U75 (no model or serial on it nowhere) two 10" fender speakers have the 6BQ5 tubes that are plentiful and sounds great.

I had the Univox 1221 and 1236. I want to say they were 6L6 loaded amps but I don’t remember. Sold those about 5 years ago

Yes, a 6X4 is a great choice. For my quad 6AQ5 I used a 6AC4. Cathode bias and tube rectifiers are a great combination!

I don’t know if I’ll actually do it but I also thought about adding a switch fo go from the 6x4 or solidstate diodes.
