My 1981 starfire is a 4-D. Could the buckers be Dimarzios even though they have covers?

Hello Darryl,

It is possible to put an HB-1 cover on a DiMarzio pickup, but it would not be an exact fit; slightly different polepiece spacing.
Just loosen the 4 screws of the mounting rings and turn the pickup around and you will have the answer.

Sincerely,

My bet is someone added the Guild HB covers at a later time. Are the covers soldered to the pickup? Does it look like the solder is "fresh"? I think a SF with the beige Dimarzio's would look pretty cool. I have seen mid 1980's SF's with the black XR7 open bobbin Dimarzio PUPs but never saw the beige bobbins on a SF.

Yes. The black open bobbin Xr7's were made by Dimarzio. Most times Guild removed the Dimarzio name by machining it away. I once saw a set of XR7's with the Dimarzio name still on the PUP.

Thanks Mat. It seems like I asked you that before, so apologies if I did. My memory is getting increasingly Californian. Sun in the heart and fog in the brain.
