Incredible video here of early Soundgarden with Kim only on guitar, also very good angles of some of the subtle things he does.

All guitar sounds courtesy of the S-100.

Almost all of this is going off-of memory: & therefore, may very well be incorrect! ;)

I never really knew that much about their gear, unlike some of the other Seattle bands. But I always loved them. I think I started playing around the time of that Down On The Upside album --where, even though I knew nothing of what guitars made what sounds--I could pretty easily & distinctly discern, a "different" guitar sound on that record, than the one before (Super Unknown).

I believe in a more recent interview (like when the band was reuniting) Kim said that they were getting into Tele's at or around that time, just to try and get a different sound. And I had always thought it was maybe a Les Paul, or something like that - that Chris was playing in the Black Hole Sun video (when it came out, I had not yet begun to play)... then I think he, Chris had said at one time that when he got his Divorce, he may have lost the guitar in that video (Gretsch? I know no-thing about those, either..;)) to his Ex. But eventually, may have gotten it back?

I think it may have been during one of those "Rig Rundown's," or something similar, where the interviewer had asked him about his selection of the brand, 'Guild' for his guitar choice. And he may have said something like, ~It's what felt familiar, as it's what I'd started out on... & so - always just felt comfortable with. I think that Spoonman, might be one of my favorite songs of theirs, as well as that whole guitar sound/tone off that record (SuperUnknown).

Once he went solo, well it was kind of "off," & "on" - in between bands (like Audioslave, which was made up of the rhythm section of Rage Against The Machine): I think I heard him (Chris) say that things really opened up for him, when he discovered Martin. He said the company sent him two guitars. I can't remember if one was a regular, or standard at the time D-28. But also a Clarence White model (whatever that means!). He may have even began out initally as a drummer. But I think after he passed, I heard the bassist of Pearl Jam say, that he's the best songwriter to ever come out of Seattle (with all due respect to J. Hendrix).

I know he really admired John Lennon, and I found it funny when he said that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't quite sing like him... That said, he could sure scream his head off when he wanted to. In fact, I think I remember an old VH-1 clip from when he first went solo, where he explained that one day, he'd scream or something to see where the top of his range was. And then the next day, he'd come back, and there was another note there (higher). And so on, and so forth. . . Wish I had that problem!

Not Sounggarden. But Temple of the Dogs "Say hello 2 heaven" showcases Chris' vocal range pre throat issues. He had a multi octave range.
