About three weeks to go - and there's delightfully plenty of daylight.

Included a picture - taken with my iPhone SE at 23.30 - facing north

What is your latitude?

Picture was taken presicely here 61.520520 23.629844

Down here in "deep south" of Finland we do not get the midnight sun - but plenty of midnight dusk & twilight

Thanks - that puts you north of Anchorage, AK. Helps me understand how far north you are.

Yup - that yellow marker is in our garden
Upper left corner is cemetery - I have a nice little spot there waiting. No rush though . . .
On the right from sports field is local schoolhouse - the junior just finished his 6th year there - new school is about 2km south.
Downtown is about 8km east-southeast ( in finnish we have 8 different names for compass points )
There's no fathomable way anybody could find a way to propose a new highway to be built through this peaceful area.

Oh - I meant this

Pohjoinen = North
Koillinen = North-east
Itä = East
Kaakko = South-east
Etelä = South
Lounas =South-west
Länsi =West
Luode =North-west

South by southwest would be "etelälounas" - not "etelä-etelälänsi"

So here we have 16 directions without doubling any words - to get 32 we do same as you do to get to 16

Or do you actually have names for those other directions?

Of course using dgrees would be easier in many cases - and far more presice.

Not really separate words, but established wind directions. Starting from East and working counterclockwise anticlockwise:

I'm currently at latitude 48.247 but grew up at latitude 34.11, so I'm wondering how you handle all that sunlight and so little darkness? It's really throwing me off with only about 7 hours of real darkness!

When I was young the light summer nights were absolutely fabulous. I still would have no problem falling asleep without dark. Our bedroom faces east on second floor - meaning that sunshine and birds will wake you up quite efficiently - unless you are like me and can still sleep. The thing is that light changes slowly. My wife can not sleep without dark roller blind - so that's what we do.

Of course there is no free lunch - so in mid winter there's only some 6 hours of daylight - that gets quite hard for some folks.

Because so many of you are holding your breath waiting for more information - tonight in 4 hours + 43 mins is the moment of solstice here.

I give you some graphs to see what's all about.

Credit of information goes to this www-page

It is in finnish

Center of that map is downtown Tampere - 8,15km East-Southeast from my place - so close enough.

Red curve indicates the longest day of the year and direction where sun rises and sets.

Green is "today" - and today it happens to be same as red curve.

Black is the shortest day of the year. Besides of not having light we are freezing our buns as bonus . . .

Map of Finland shows you the times of sunrise and sunset today - plus length of daylight - depending where you are.

Top left "yötön yö" means "night without night" - the sun doesn't go down at all.

My location is northwest from Helsinki - at the end of that slightly thicker line - which is a freeway - we do not have thet many freeways here.

Finally this table - here in Tampere

On left column are the months
Second column is sunrise
Third column is sunset
Fourth column is length of day hr:min
Fifth column is the max elevation of sun in degrees
Sixth column is compass direction of sunrise
Seventh column is compass direction of sunset

Just in case you did not know all this before . . .

I found a similar interesting chart for Munich/Germany. Munich latitude is 48.137154, which means a latitude like just North of the border to Canada and South of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

They show 5 different degreeds of light or darkness from January till December and you see the impact of the time change in spring and autumn.
Real Night (Nacht)
Astronomical twilight (astromomische Dämmerung)
Nautical twilight (Nautische Dämmerung)
Civil twilight (Bürgerl. Dämmerung) - What the heck is that?
Daylight (Tageslicht) = sunrise 05:15 and sunset 21:17 today

Unfortunatelly here it's raining and was dark almost all day today...So no solstice parties...

Here are two pictures of flowers - took them about 20 min past midnight - them flowers do not look like they were sleeping either . . .

IMG_4115.jpg

Both pics taken w iPhone SE - the lens has a diameter of about 1/4 or less - therefore colours do not shine when light is dim.

Since I'm not a farmer - and therefore have no grain fields - I did not see any naked ladies rolling there doing their midsummer magic

Late evening photo of a black dog - sun is setting down behind trees and little light seeps through.
Taken with iPhone - a rare moment, when he sits still.
